    Vaio pcg-3e1m

There was a power surge in my friend's house and it tripped the mains.
Laptop was plugged in at the time.

When I looked at it first, I just thought it might have been some dodgy programme or a virus or something. He hadn't informed me of the power surge.
I attempted to re-install windows, but could only get so far before it froze.

My friend then brought it back to the Sony retailer and they told him that all he needed was a new battery and that running it from the mains will do the job. Apparently all that went was the battery connector and they said that they had fixed it.

So I'm sitting here now with the same problem.
Decided to give Ubuntu a try, but that froze at 5% in the partitions formatting section of the installation. Brand new hard drive too, so that's not the problem.

Got the Ubuntu live cd to load, but it froze as soon as I opened Firefox.

Anyone have a clue as to where I go from here?

Try to swap memory modules, check hdd for bad sectors (even if it's new). Use hiren's cd to test your laptop.
If this won't help, you might have problem with systemboard.
    Post the test results.

I tried swapping them around. I will check for bad sectors. I doubt there will be any. I only got it by courier a few hours ago.

Did manage to get Ubuntu installed. It ran for about 20 minutes. Just long enough for the basic hardware test.

I'll check out Hiren's cd. Cheers.

Another reason of freezing can be overheating. Check it first.

    Definitely not overheating.
About 2 months ago I replaced the thermal paste.
It ran fine until the power surge.

Terry if not HDD, RAM, overheating issue then we have two possible reasons left. CPU or systemboard.

    Yeah, it's the motherboard.
Going shopping around for a new one.

    Thanks for the help, folks.
