Went into Tesco the other day to buy alcohol, produced my passport and she wouldn't sell me alcohol due to my passport being 2 months out of date.

I'm 21, and it clearly states it on my passport, which is official ID.

Was she allowed to refuse me purchasing alcohol on this technicality?

she can refuse to sell you anything if she wants.

    Valid I.D.

    Out of date = invalid.

    Grow a beard.

you didn't produce a valid id.
technically after asking you for id and you not being able to produce any, she HAS to refuse you.

She can't accept it in case you got younger since the ID went out of date.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Expired ID is like expired yoghurt.

Neither of them are going to get you any booze but at least yoghurt can be used a cheap alternative for semen on a film set.

God, I would never have thought of that. She is smart!

Only assumption could be that you could have got that ID from someone who now has a newer passport. i.e. they gave their out of date one to you.

Other than that I think this out of date stuff is bollocks.

Some chick working in tesco in ballina refused to accept my driving license as valid ID, saying they only accept the age card. I was surprised I was even asked for ID because I'm 23 and I look nowhere near 18 or younger for that matter. This girl looked no older then 18 which really annoyed me at the time.

What are with peoples responses "you had an invailid id" and "she doesn't have to sell you anything if she doesn't want to". absolute nonsense!
what are with all these moral high ground responses on this forum?
the chap had a passport that was a couple months past its due date, so what? It's still him.
he's buying some drink in tesco, he's not f*cking trying to sneak into the US.

I had a similar experience with Meteor needing ID and wouldn't accept my out of date Drivers licence. I even tried Dara O'Briein's line "eh I'm still the same person" but no luck. Silly rule..

Moral High Ground? But where else are we going to mount our High Horses?

As someone pointed out, an expired ID could be given away to someone else and altered so hence it's invalid. As far as I know an expired ID won't be much good to you anywhere. That's the way life goes. It's not a question of THE MAN being out to get him, it's just a question of him not having a valid ID.

When I was younger and I wanted to buy booze you know what I did? I made sure I had a valid ID. It wasn't very hard.

    *walks off grumbling*

People these days think they are owed everything even though they're not doing anything themselves I tell ya in my day it was different we had to work for our booze and we made sure we kept our IDs up to date and we had to walk to school in our bare feet carrying a sack of coal for the fire in the school because we'd freeze to death without but try telling the kids these days that and they won't believe you.

there is a difference between cop on and following the letter of the law. This is an example of following the letter of the law. The use of cop on would have beenbetter

Ya, Tesco are bastards for that. Went to Tesco in Cork once to buy drink with a friend. Only ID I had was my drivers licence and they wouldn't accept it. I was 20 and the only way I could get drink there was to get my friend, who looked 12 but had a Garda ID, to buy it for me! Oh the shame.

I always thought it stupid that age card isn't considered a valid form of identification, yet many stores will only accept that and refuse other forms that are considered more valid (i.e. passport and driving license).

An altered out-of date ID? But why not alter an in-date ID?
    Your logic is silly.

While right, I suppose they are going by most likely. A tampered in-date passport to buy drink is less likely, as it would render the passport invalid.

Someone's passport expires - they give it to their younger brother and let him do what he wants with it. Used to happen all the time when I was young and people tried to get away with using it then to buy booze.

It's not my logic, it's just the general thinking behind it.

I didn't create the system gosh darn it.

Yep. When I worked part-time in a bar during college this was a common tactic especially among girls.

I knew a girl who used her old sister's passport to get served in many places in town. When questioned about the picture (she looks similar to her sister), she just said its her old passport and she looks different now. Majority of the time it worked.

A friend of mine works in tesco in cavan and he said a girl came in one day with a child in a buggy and wanted to buy a bottle of wine. He asked her for I.D to which she replied "I don't need any I have a kid". He said no and she started casing a row, the manager walked over and told my friend to let her buy the wine.

That's just ridiculous, but there you go op just get a sex change and borrow some ones child and you will get served alcohol.

If the brother wants to buy booze the older brother will give it to him either way! Its not as if he needs it every second of every day.

Same thing happened to me in Limerick recently at a Lidl. I had my full driving licence with me, plus I also offered to get my passport from the car but your man behind the counter was steadfast in refusing to sell alcohol to me. Im nearly 24 FFS.

You obviously had generous older brothers.

My younger brothers got told to f*ck off when they wanted to borrow mine.

I went to the college shop one day to get smokes.
    Didn't think to bring id.
So I begged and moaned and showed them my student id, my engagement+wedding rings, my car keys, and photo's of my 3 year old and 8 year old.
It worked in the end - but think it was more to do with shutting me up and getting me the hell out of their shop!

So thats why they always accept my age card. I dont expect to get id'd as im 27 but i seem to in tesco a lot. and all i ever have is my useless old 8 card in my wallot (dont carry my passport or driving licence) - its 10 years old faded and cracked and surprises me every time they accept it!

was it a 10 year passport? You would have been 11 in the pic. She cant serve beer to 11 year olds!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,028 ✭✭✭✭--LOS--

Unfortunately they have every right to refuse you if it is out of date, stupid all right though. Similarly if you have one of the old style garda age cards which ceased production in 2007, it may not be accepted but I've never had a problem with that.

You got IDed and did not have valid ID so she did her job and refused to sell you the alcohol.

... get over it, you're nitpicking. If she sold you it she could have lost her job. It's not official ID if it's out of date.

I presume it's store policy and they go by the letter of the law to prevent lawsuits and the like. I doubt the girl really wants to p*ss off the OP, she's probably more concerned with her job. I would think Tesco want to sell the beer at whatever cost (within legal limits, of course). So I would blame the law not the girl on the counter.

I had a fairly awful photo on my passport until I was 21. It resulted in bouncers laughing at how bad it was and then refusing to serve me because they didn't believe it was me.
