Pre-marriage course

Got engaged a month ago. Saw the priest last weekend at the OH's church down the country, gave us a list of all the stuff we had to do. Said get the pre-marriage course done ASAP and do it with accord as the other one is not recommended. What is the other one?

Found one on the web called "mount argus together PMC" in Tallaght. Accord is a 2 day 200 euro course, Mount argus is 1 day 100 euro course which is obviously the one I'd rather. He can't force us to do the accord one can he?

    Are there others?

Call him and ask him whether the Mount Argus one is acceptable. He may tell you that he wants you to do the Accord one and tbh, what he says goes. I called our priest as his recommendations were for courses that were only run in that county and I have since moved to Dublin. He actually told me to do the Mount Argus one as it's shorter. Your priest may not have thought of the Mount Argus one, or he may just insist on the Accord one. I can't remember the name of the other one but it doesn't seem to be accepted by a lot of priests.

    Call him and ask him.

We did ours in All Hallows. There is loads of different pre marriage courses, some priests prefer certain courses, others dont mind as long as you cover the key areas.

If he is going to be marrying you and he has requested you do accord then id recomend you do that one. My local priest it turns out is actually very involved in accord and he made it sound quite good, the course we did talked about divorce a lot which we didnt really like.

+1 squeky. "We" did the Avalon course 3 odd years ago and found it really good. One day course, can't remember what it cost, but didn't break the bank.

We did a three hour one in Drogheda but can't remember the name.
It was given by a divorcee and an ex-nun so I had a good laugh at them trying to give me advice on how to have a successful marriage.

I've known friends that went to the accord ones and they came out flabberghasted at how right wing, homophobic and racist they were.

If you do have to go to one, I'd recommend you just bite the tongue for however long it takes and try not to scream "bigots" at them ;)

I did a premarriage course last year with my ex-girlfriend/current wife at the clarion in liffey valley. It was very boring but the instructor was a babe.

Anyone know of short ones in cork? I wouldn't be able for ones going on two days long.

The short answer is yes he can, they set the rules.
Check out the prices of the others and go back and ask him but I wouldn't waste your money on another course unless he has approved it.

I did the accord one, pretty boring but it was fine. It was given by married lay people, not by priests. It was a friday night (7-10 i think) and all day saturday (9 to 5). You have to stay till the very end cos they don't hand out the certs till then. My biggest problem was that for 200 quid they didn't even provide lunch!!

You can book them online here: http://www.accord.ie/
They get booked out quickly so give yourself plenty of time!

I think Avalon is the one that the priest didn't want you to do....the church is having some dispute with the providers.
We didn't have to do one at all - in Ferns!

Hey guys im not getting married until sept 2013 but was just wondering how long the pre marriage course certs are valid for? it would be handy to get the course done and out of the way if they were valid for long enough!

It looks like online pre-marriage courses are not officially approved as preparation for a Catholic marriage in Ireland. At least one diocese (Dublin) clearly says that an online pre-marriage course does not fulfil the conditions required by the Irish bishops. Or so it would seem, from their statement at http://www.dublindiocese.ie/content/diocesan-statement-avalon-dvd

So while some online study may be very useful, it appears not to be quite enough by way of marriage preparation.

A friend of mine got married a while back but he did his Accord wedding course in an evening down near Mallow. Over and done with in a few hours but he can't find the details. Any one hear of this ? Can you PM the details if you have any.
