MAME Cabinet - laptop or pc ?

    Howdy all,

Reading steve's woes about his egret has put back my own candy plans for a wee while , so I'm going to upgrade the pc in my cab.

Quick question , for updating roms / emus easily would I be better off using a laptop ? I could get a reasonably cheap laptop , chuck in 4 gb of ram or more and away I go ? Or am I missing something obvious ?
I'm not interested in emulating tekken tag or the likes (more an 80s arcade rat : think shinobi) so I dont think I'd need a huge powerhouse.
Also , anyone using their cab with a snes / md emu ? I'm thinking it just isnt the same without the proper pads , but without the room for multiple consoles it maybe my only solution.

I dunno, laptops get hot at the best of times. Unless you decase it somewhat I could see there being issues from lack of ventilation. A basic €200 pc will happily do what you need it for.

Was recently playing Sonic 2, Gunstar Hero's, & Super Smash TV on the cab...joypads be damned! Seriously though it will depend on the game, but in all likelyhood an arcade stick will only enhance the experience of a lot of them.

I have a full size cab which I use an old HP compaq small form factor PC on, does the job for me.
Again I can't run Tekken Tag or some other 3d games but its grand for 95% of the games.
I am in the process of building a bartop and a cocktail.
I am using a small pc for the bartop and a laptop for the Ikea cocktail.

As for Nes emu, all games play fine with my sticks, no problems wahtsoever.

I am planning on updating the pc on my main cab but not in a hurry as most play fine.

I'm definitely a neophyte on this , but a laptop running underclocked (a lot of the old ones will run speedstep software and you can tweak it to make sure it doesnt run at its higher speed) and possibly with the screen removed (you'll be outputting to a monitor/crt and it means you can get a cheapo broken screen one off ebay)is the way I'll be looking at doing it.
I was thinking of putting some sort of discreet vent system in as well to make sure theres a good airflow. (couple of small vents at the front bottom , and a maybe a large vent panel at the back).

Those 3D games on mame all run slow on my machine, but is there away around that? i thought all the games where software emulated with mame, so no matter what pc you have they are going to run slow?

Thats it, because mame is cpu driven. The other emu's will look better doing the same games as they make use of 3d acceleration. Mame has its uses, but for the polygon hungry...its nice to have some other emulators parked alongside mame.

Vivva Nonno is a good one for Ridge Racer
Nebula team make a good Model 2 emulator for Sega Model 2
    Makaron for Sega Naomi

There loads really, mame covers almost all my 2d needs & the 3d games can be ran elsewhere through Hyperspin.

Is mame still big into the accuracy over playability kick?
i remember there was a change of regime in amongst the devs a few years back and a load of games went from being playable to running dog slow /no sound etc as it was more accurate.

Yep, the internal politics is the mame team is beyond belief. I get the ethos alright, 100% accuracy for preseveration...but its run in a militaristic fashion.

I'll try the laptop later and see how it goes.
I just happen to have quite a few spare old laptops.

..I was on a forum called worldofstuart a few years back(home page for a games journalist), where they basically worked out you were nearly better running an old mame release..hang on see if I can find the link
    ..aha here
