Plumbing Quote

    Hi all,

Just a question about a quote we received.

Thing is - its a bit vague for me. We were told in it

    ...supply and fit...

    ...boiler (brand)...
    ...hot water cylinder (no brand)...
    ...replumb...
    ...remove a few old pipes...

    then a quote (inc VAT).

I guess my point is, if he went into Tesco's and the checkout girl said - "sure about E200 for the lot" and didn't break down the price to each component - he'd go mad.

So what I'm saying is - should I nail him down for the price of everything
    ie Boiler
    Hot Water Cylinder
How much copper/qualplex he's gonna use
How many fittings and what types is he gonna use.

At least that way, I can see how much he's charging to do all this work.

Which brings me onto the price of his labour - I'm loathe to pay anyone more than what I get paid a day - should a job like this be on the day rate or by the job?

    Thanks for any advice

I normally quote for boiler price, cylinder price, radiator price, controls package, the pipe, fittings and sundries would be under materials and then labour sub total, vat and total.

It's impossible to say for certain the exact amount of fittings that would be used, the pipe would be easier but you have to allow for unseen hiccups. I remember running a hot and cold for a shower only to find An RSJ right across the house. I had to run it up into the attic and back down, extra 2 lengths of pipe and fittings.

I usually try to estimate how long it will take and charge accordingly.

And also remember he is a company and must make a profit for the company.

You say you hate paying anyone more than what you get paid! what if your on the minimum wage, you wont get a legitimate plumber charging the minimum wage.

    Hope this helps:)

Totally understand this. It really is a full replumb, new central heating system, new rads.

Is it ok to try and source the materials cheaper - I would want to be certain that I'm getting quality materials at the best price.

    Again, I understand that.

Good point 5 days work couldn't be more than 600 for labour, could it. I mean thats a solid wage these days. I mean, I wouldnt pay 1000 for labour for a weeks work. Thats madness surely.

Just on your point about the Labour and equating that to his wage , it doesnt work like that , if hes legit you are also paying for insurance etc along with other stuff life certifying your boiler etc all of which cost money. Trust me the 600 doesnt just drop into his pocket :D although many wish it worked like that.
