Potential "sale" of the National Lottery

I feel RTE didn't really understand the dynamics of the Lottery when they reported on it's potential "sale" today.

Surely it's more likely the franchise would be licenced for a certain period as is the case with Camelot in the UK.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camelot_Group

That being the case, I wouldn't see it as a great money generator as the only scope would be that a private enterprise may make just make the operation leaner and might generate an extra few percent of savings a year, for which they will want a cut of a good bit of it anyway.

    Well done David Murphy

Or ........ am I wrong here?!?

I hope they don't sell the Irish lottery I love playing! We'll just have to wait and see what happens!

Does the state not have a conflict of interests in running a lottery.

    1. Attempt to get people to play the lottery

    2. Educate children so that they understand maths and probability

Should the same institution really be doing 1 and 2?

I think most people who play the Lotto understand the odds of them winning are extremely low. I found it odd that they don't display the actual odds of winning in their ads though.

You have to look through their website.

I never seen it stated anywhere how much money it would bring in a sale that is, anyone?

Its hard to imagine a private company buying into any sort of an entity that did'nt make a pofit, we have a history of getting into contracts particularly of the private/public variety where the tax payer has to make up the shortfall if profits drop or are not realised, i.e. NRA and tolls.

is it not just a case that it distributes its profits to charities & sports clubs?

It's on the small print on the back of the slips that you check the boxes when picking numbers!

There has to be some sort of a "win" for the buyer, or why bother taking it over, it may simply be that a percentage of the take goes to overhead/running costs etc.
