It depends if you want to heat rads and hot water or if you just want to heat room.

Changing the open fire to an inset stove is the best thing you could do, either with or without boiler. Open fires are very inefficient, approx 20%, whereas stoves are approx 80% efficient depending on the stove. Basically, for room heating only, you will get approximately twice the heat for half the fuel and will no longer have an open flue drawing all the heat from the room even when the fire is not lit.

    hi
im going to buy a stove for sitting room in the next day or so.
    the sitting room is 12"3" x 13" 11" (3.73x4.24)
theres an existing open fire which we are replacing with the stove
any recommendations on non boiler stoves,to burn turf/briquettes/logs
what kind of stove should we look out for.
the open fire has a wooden surround and just the usual grate open fires have.
do we need to do anything regarding chimney or anything else.
would 8kw be good, dont know anything about stoves only what i see on boards
    thanks
