Friend at work wondered, 'why do we celebrate this'. So I googled it. Why the hell not. Maybe you know. Maybe you don't.

Basically it's a Worker's Appreciation Day (duh) but wasn't made a National Holiday until the Pullman Strike in 1894. Some Railworkers decided to go on strike and somewhere in the chaos a bunch of strikers got killed by the Military and the US Marshalls. Oops. How do we save our re-elections? Rush a bill through Congress making Labor Day a national holiday. Whew. Better. Oh and we're sorry we made you a widow. Have a parade.

Ah yes, Labor Day... got a chuckle when I heard it mentioned that it just wouldn’t be the same without some guy named Jimmy Hoffa threatening his political enemies while the union-stooge Democratic leader sits by and smiles.

“We got to keep an eye on the battle that we face: The war on workers. And you see it everywhere, it is the Tea Party. And you know, there is only one way to beat and win that war. The one thing about working people is we like a good fight. And you know what? They've got a war, they got a war with us and there's only going to be one winner. It's going to be the workers of Michigan, and America. We're going to win that war…"

"President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. Let's take these son of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong,"

And of course President Obama doesn’t condemn Hoffa's words, but instead praises him. Surprise, surprise. Now there’s a president of the people, eh?

the corporations determine our lives more than the government does

how much we make, when we work

they can fire us with out explanation or reason

If that’s true then I guess there is no need or use for the US government's NLRB (National Labor Relations Board), and it should be eliminated, eh? Or maybe there main focus these days of the NLRB should be in telling corporations which states they are allowed or not allowed to manufacture their products.

    don't know what that is

certainly didn't keep the manager from getting rid of full time employees to replace them with part time employees without benefits

Might depend on the State. California is an 'At Will' state, meaning that the employment contract can be terminated by either party for any reason they feel like, from unsuitable sock colour through being informed by the Space Lizards that you're really a re-incarnation of Josef Stalin and are about to overthrow the Board.

but then they got to pay unemployment

so perhaps harass the workers to quit
