Plumbing - Indirect System

    Hi all,

Sorry to ask such a really stupid question - but I'm kinda struggling with how our indirect system works. Please correct me or help as I go along.

    What does indirect mean?

    The mains feeds the
    - cold water cistern
    - the expansion tank (at least, I think its called an expansion tank)

    The cold water cistern feeds
    - the hot water cylinder
    - all the cold water upstairs and toilets (I presume thats separate to the water going into the hot water cylinder.
    - does the size of the cold water tank matter? If its job is to resupply the hot water cylinder and the toilets - would I be wrong is saying it isn't necessary to have a huge one.

    We have a 40/20 - 197 litre/43 gallon.

    The expansion tank feeds
    - I'm not exactly sure. Is this feeding the radiators?
    - we have an overflow pipe back into this tank - where is that coming from?
    - should overflow pipes be in the tank or just outside the tank?

    Overflow
    - Hot Water Cylinder
-- this has an overflow pipe from the cylinder into the cold water cistern
    - Expansion Tank & Cold Water Cistern
-- this has an overflow from these tanks to the soffitt
-- in my house, both overflows from both tanks join together before meeting the soffitt and are both qualplex. Is this right - should there be separate pipes to two separate overflows? Should it be copper?

Can I have three zones with an indirect or does it need to be changed to a direct?

I really would appreciate your help here.

    What does indirect mean?

    - all the cold water upstairs and toilets (toilits may have a gravity feed) and water going into the hot water cylinder.
    - does the size of the cold water tank matter? only if its been used as a resivoir .depends on what its feeding.

    We have a 40/20 - 197 litre/43 gallon.

    The expansion tank feeds
    - I'm not exactly sure. Is this feeding the radiators? most likly yes. if its an open vented heating system.
    - we have an overflow pipe back into this tank - where is that coming from? expansion pipe
    - should overflow pipes be in the tank or just outside the tank? expansion pipes direct expansion water back into the tank.overflows are directed outside the property.

    Overflow
    - Hot Water Cylinder
-- this has an overflow pipe from the cylinder into the cold water cistern????????expansion pipe
    - Expansion Tank & Cold Water Cistern??????one feeding the heating the other demestic supplies (hot and Cold)
-- this has an overflow from these tanks to the soffitt?????over flow pipe
-- in my house, both overflows from both tanks join together before meeting the soffitt and are both qualplex. Is this right - should there be separate pipes to two separate overflows? Should it be copper?ok as long as they have a sufficent fall.

Can I have three zones with an indirect or does it need to be changed to a direct? yes upstairs , downstairs, hot water.

read the post i have bumped up about preventing heating costs. indirect cylinder explained in that and about expansion vessels ect.

now what you seem to have from your post is an open vented heating system. (also explained in that post). the heating is filled by the small tank in the attic and the water will pitch into the tank via the pipe just directed to go into the top of the tank (that seems to be serving no purpose) as a saftey device for expansion.

the hot and cold supplies are getting fead by the big tank in attic.expansion pipe serves same function for the hot water cylinder.

the overflows in attic are a saftey device from both tanks and directed outside the property.

Thats your system....fimilarise yourself with your system then you will be easier to understand more.

Yes, zoning will not be an issue.
