Quick one for you who have been at this years, started recently shooting pretty good considering im only playing a short while, consistently been hitting high 80s with the odd low-mid 90, last week shot an 86 and 2 89's including yesterday in pissy weather. But whenever it comes to a comp i seem to play crap?!?! Played a stableford last week and scratched 8 holes! 8! Played last monthly medal and shot a 99, was all over the shop bar 4 or 5 holes :(

Playing this sunday and im hoping i can play decent and shoot high 80s. How do you find you play in comps compared to regular rounds of golf, better or worse or what do you do to stay calm and focused? Cheers :D
    (Off 17 by the way)

Same for most people, including me. Experience plays a large part, you'll get used to it.

The more competitions you play the easier it gets. Also, forget about your score and just take each shot at a time. I've often played a competition and at the end of the round had no idea what I was after shooting until I got my card off my playing partner.

Welcome to the world of golf.

    I feel your pain.

Played a medal yesterday and returned a score that the cat would have beaten...Jaysus..this game! :(

am the exact same Tones, casual round i always score well and in a competition its a disaster. We even use the back tees the odd time in a practice round to get used to the extra distance and it makes no difference.

As Opics say's my best scores too have come from his suggestion. Try playing every hole on its own merits and forget about holes you have played and holes you are going to play. Play each hole the best you can and think about nothing else, especially adding up strokes or stableford points in the middle of the round or even after nine. You'll will surprise yourself how well you have done when you dont go chasing a specific number.

stick at it n youll def crack it.
im new to this comp crack myself and have had some real howlers, but I also had one awesome day where I trashed my pb by 9 strokes and won the s/fd by 6 points!
went out the next day and shot a 114!!! - came last.:D thats golf.

its definitely a much more enjoyable way to play though as you have to focus a bit more. Plus no one else will really give you any stick when you have a stinker as it happens everyone.

one other point which may or may not be relevant to you, but for me I know when the practice round isnt going great i tend to not really bother counting score and try to work on practicing something, be it approach, chips, putts, whatever - so in liklihood the practice round that would potentially have been a stinker wont actually get totted up....

anyway, the main thing is keep enterin them, Id say youll have a win on saturday!
