Lads Im just wondering if the zero stays the same if the moderator is taken off a centrefire rifle for cleaning or storage and then re-attached? Im shooting a steyr .25-06 with a zeiss scope and reflex t8 mod. I took the mod off yesterday morning cos I was travelling a long jorney and the case is too short for the gun with the mod attached, went out stalking in the evening with the mod reattached and fired at a pricket 40 yds away, striking him 3 inches from where I aimed. I checked the gun today and its firing 3 inches to the right of original zero. It didnt get a knock and a few other lads have noticed the same. Should it affect the zero cos if it does Id sooner leave it off.

ok there fella as far as i remember your moderator on gun should be ok off or on but if you fire off the bullet should be 4 inches high but should be ok otherwise unless a knock

Unless it got a slight knock and put the sights off?!

Cant see how it would affect it just by taking the moderator off and putting it back on again!?

Are you zeroing the rifle with the moderator on?

Im zeroing the gun with the mod on but it never seems to stay zeroed when i take it off and re-attach before I hunt. The gun incidentally was factory threaded

Must of got a knock, there's no reason for that to put the sights off.

I remove my mod everytime I come home, clean the rifle and mod, out again another day and the sights are still bang on.

I've seen cleaning affect the POI of first shot or two out of a rifle.

But, with everything else being equal, taking off the mod and screwing it back on won't make any difference to the POI assuming the rifle was zeroed with the mod on in the first place.

In transit and in the safe the T8 mod is never on my rifle and I don't have the problem you describe.

Ya correct I use a steyr 308 no problem with taking on off moderator, POI stays perfect

I'm not using a Mod long on my rifle but I don't think that its a good idea to leave the Mod on the rifle all the time. I always take my Mod off after use.

Also I did find a coupe of weeks ago that my groups were bigger than expected when I got home I discovered the Mod was loose on the rifle.

You're right, it's not. I've seen people in a panic as their mod has become attached to their rifle (semi) permanently by "crud welding". If the mod isn't cleaned, left on the rifle, and stored upright in the safe there's more problems with moisture reacting with burnt powder etc. possibly leading to crown damage etc. Just generally a mess that's avoidable.

What cal? With rapid-ish firing, like at zeroing/targets more than hunting, the mod will heat up and can some times loosen. Always good to check during those situations just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I checked it today and the groups are fine after taking off the mod and re-attaching. Must have been loose or the wind which was blowing left to right 20mphs wouldnt have helped either. Again thanks!!:)

.223 it was definitely loose I'ld say it was the way I put it on, I always give it an extra squeeze just to make sure now and haven't had any issues, 55 grain v-max rounds are touching at 100 yards.

Try using PTFE tape on the thread, very high melting point and will stop carbon build up and keep mod tight
