Help With Lenses

    Hey guys,

I'm going to be getting a 600D body soon, and along with it I'm getting the Canon 50mm F/1.8 but I'd also like to get another lens, preferably a telephoto or something.

I have a budget of 200 euro for the lens, and I've been looking at a few so far including the
    • Canon EF-S 55-250MM F4-5.6 IS
    • Canon EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 III USM
    • Sigma 70-300mm DG F4-5.6 APO Macro

They're the 3 I've looked at so far, but I'd like somebodies opinion who has experience in photography. Which would be the best one to buy? or do you know any other good lenses for under 200?

I'm looking for an all purpose one, something that will do all jobs when the 50mm isn't suitable.

Hi, i have owned the 55-250 and was quiet pleased with it, however as my skills developed i have upgraded to the 70-200 f4.0L and its a beauty but considerably more expensive. If its just for hobby i would recommend the 55-250.

Mostly i'm a hobby photographer, but I'll also be doing a photography course soon and hopefully I'll progress onto better lenses after that. I'll probably end up getting another lens sometime next year, most likely around June. I just need a lens to keep me going until then.

I am no expert but have been into photography for a long time and have bought many lenses "to get me going" or "see me through" and I wished I had saved all that money and got the lens I really wanted. You could do worse than stick with the 50mm, a 50mm lens will force you to think more about what you are taking yes it will limit you but it will also give you a great grounding in basic photography, using your feet instead of a telephoto lens to get the framing you want.

My advice would be take it slow and learn all you can about your new camera and what sort of photography you want to get into, save that €200 towards a lens that you really want and will never want to get rid of.

    +1 - Good advice

Hmm, right now I'd like 2 lenses because of the fact that I love landscape and portrait photography. The 50mm would be useless for landscape, but I love the effect it gives to portraits etc.. so I really want the 50mm lens but I want something for landscape too.

Anyways, I could sell my lens when I have enough money to buy a more advanced one.

Just my opinion. For the majority of landscape shots a lens of 17 to 40 is probably the most used focal length. I would also go along with the previous posters advice, stick with the 50mm for a while before purchasing a second lens. You will soon want a nice fast zoom which will work well in low light and this will be expensive, save for it whilst you enjoy the 50mm.

You could use your 50mm for landscapes also. A good tripod, use your camera in portrait and stitch them together using photoshop??

I've just talked it through with my parents.. I'm getting the 600D with 18-55mm kit lens, along with a Canon 50mm f/1.8. Getting it all for a really good price online, saving over 185 euro compared to if we bought it all in Ireland so i'm happy with that saving. I'll pick up a nice lens next year in June for my birthday :)

    Thanks for your replies everyone

What country in Europe is it coming from? Check it out, as if it's coming from somewhere like Jersey or outside of Europe, you may still get hit by customs.

Getting it from Digital Rev in Hong Kong. They include customs on their price, and give it to the courier to pay as far as I know. I've talked to a few people on here who've dealt with them and had no problems :) I also emailed just to confirm, and they just told me to send a receipt to the revenue saying that I payed, and if theres any problems that they will sort it out
