Hi I have a Polo, only started driving not long ago. Basically I was setting off for college tonight to be there for tomorrow. I took off in first, went to switch into 2nd and while the gearstick was passing the center it flew into the middle and wont go into any gear at all and stalled. I had to start the car and somehow managed to get it to roll backwards where I parked it up. When I try put it in reverse it makes a horrible noise and then konks out. Can anyone tell me what this problem is?

What year is it? The linkages give trouble in the 95-99 ones and the seal on the gearbox leaks oil. I hope the box didnt go dry of oil..

Its a 97. I had an oil warning in it a while ago but that went after I got the car serviced a few weeks ago. I told the chap in the garage about it when I dropped it in to be serviced and he said he'd sort that for me. Any ideas what I should do about it? I guess it won't fix itself given time :(

The oil light would not have anything to do with it. Have a look under the gear box and if its wet with oil you are in trouble.
