How to clean up a fire insert?

I have an iron (i think) fire insert its been sitting in the shed for the past 2 years I need to put it in as the heat of the stove is damaging the plaster on the walls. Its gone rusty in places and needs to be restored to its former glory how do I do it?

A good fire in it then rub down with wire brush or brillo pad, dry it and spray it with wd40.

Hi I'm a bit clueless when you say put a fire in it what do you mean? It is a cast iron insert something like the one in the link.

Cleaning it with baby oil will remove the rust.
