Taxi Drivers

    Howdy

Alright, here's the story. Two nights ago I was heading to a party with my girlfriend and my mate. So, we were in Tallaght, near the Square to be exact, and the party was in Ballyfermot so we waved a taxi down and hopped in.

Now, I've never been to Ballyfermot, so it's fair to say that I've never gotten a taxi to Ballyfermot. I gave the taxi driver the address and we were away. Everything was going grand until...

"What was that address again?" asked the taxi man. I gave him the address again.
He then asked "Is that near the police station?" . I looked at him and replied
"I don't know, I've never been to Ballyfermot before."

He then drove around Ballyfermot for a good 20 - 30 minutes looking for the address. I then got my friend to come out of the house we were looking for and come find us. At this stage I was fuming.

Now, I was sitting in the back seat during the whole journey , so I didn't see the fare charge. He turns to us and goes "Ah, just call it 30 euro". When he said this I thought the charge was about 40 euro, and he took a tenner off for getting lost.

Nope , the charge was 30.05 . He took five cent off. Cheers.

My question to you all is :

Has this ever happened to you? And if it did, what did you do?

And, if it hasn't happened to you, what would you do?

If he didn't know where the house was chances are if you ran like fcuk you could've evaded payment and got off scot free.

That's awful!! I hate it when I have to give directions to a taxi which is all to common in Galway and its a small place!

Taxi drivers tend to take the pi55 a bit all right. Wouldn't surprise me if he played the thick just to drag a few extra quid out of you. €30 for tallaght to ballyfermot? Rip off.

I guess the best thing to do would be to make sure the driver knows where the place is before setting off. He should have GPS - they're not as expensive as they were a few years ago.

    theGavin,
    Chalk this up to experience.
Sadly you made the mistake of letting the meter run up. You shouldnt trust the average Taxi Driver because they will gladly drive you around trying to find the place (in reality squeezing that bit more out of you)

Taxi drivers would rarely know an estate. Just the area. So never rely on them to get you to the doorstep of a place you dont know. Sure anytime I was getting one over to an estate of a place I didnt know. I'd ask the person who i am going to where its near. I wouldnt trust them.

Maybe he was overcharging me to purchase a GPS device ;)

In London, taxi drivers have to take a test before becoming a cab driver. They have to know every single street in London. Should be brought in here tbh

all cabs should have satnavs as standard, ridiculous that drivers dont know the city they're driving in.

You paid hime €30 because the clueless git couldn't find the address?
Pay him for getting you to Ballyfermot plus €3. After that he can sod off. Does he expect you to drive as well?

I've got some taxi stories to share :P
One that happened to me was being in town on a saturday night. One of the rare times I wasnt drinking and sober ( :P ) So afterwards I jump in a taxi outside burger king on o'connell street. Tell him Blanchardstown. All seems grand. He then takes a left onto abbey street, another left on liffey street, another left on the the quays then ANOTHER left back on to o'connell street passing burger king. He obviously thought I was drunk and was thinking "i'll get into this fool"

Another one was I was coming back from town. Had 50 euro in my pocket. He drops me outside my house. I say I am just going to pop in and get something smaller (didnt want to break the 50) .. he starts going "nah nah i can change it mate" - I say "only take a second" - so run in, grab the money, go back out and hand the money in through the car window (only took 30 seconds) He gives me my change. As I am walking back to my gate i notice i am around 7 euro short. I turn around and as he is driving off shouts "wa*ker" at me  ... what a fu*king tosser!

Ive only ever ad a handful of bad experiences with taxi drivers, the most recent being when I was getting a taxi home from town on a saturday night, a little bit worse for wear, but still knowing my way home. The taxi driver took me the longest way possible, went half way around the world, then decided to ignore me telling him what turn to take, adding a good 5 minutes into our journey! I wasn't impressed, fare was about €35, when its normally €20.

I gave him €25 and told him to be careful who he tries that on in future.

    Whos the most at fault?

    The taxi driver who overcharges?

    or

    The customer who pays up?

If your not happy with the service provided don't pay it:)

    No good complaining afterwards.

I didn't really give it much thought until the end of the night when I got a taxi home from the place and the taxi man only charged me 20 euro.

He must have thought I was a lot drunker than I actually was! I was quite merry, but still had my wits about. And I was on my own in the taxi so he thought id be a shy little wall flower or something.

    No dice!!

I don't know maybe I'm being a bit unfair to taxi drivers in general but I get a lot of taxi's due to being late in work a lot and having a few scoops in town on Friday or Saturday night. So drunk or sober I've seen both sides plenty of times. At this point I'm getting really sick of taxi drivers taking the piss when it comes to taking the fastest (and by that I mean the proper) route home. Its not like I'm going to some obscure location either I live off the M1 and it usually all starts from the moment I'm picked up, they try to go this way (down Camden street) that is basically a car park at night and takes 15 to 20 minutes just to get across the Liffey. So now to avoid any "why are we going this way rubbish" I find I have to issue specific instructions about which route to take every time I jump in a cab these days. Its ridiculous, particularly when you get out of work late and all you want to do is get home as quickly as possible, of course I've had my fair share of sound taxi drivers but there are far too many chancers out there. We're paying enough to use them so shouldn't we expect a professional service?
