Looking at getting one of these, Seems like great value for money

Its either Asus or the HP

    What do you think?

Any thoughts on this one: HP Mini 110 3104 Black/Red Netbook ?? Looking for something portable for taking with us when travelling ... ideally was looking for something with a dvd also (and getting rid of the portable dvd player for kids) but not sure - any advice? Better to stick with smaller and take the dvd player or go for a 15.6" one like this: http://www.carphonewarehouse.ie/Product/Asus-X5DIJ-ULV-Netbook/237982/2_1

Can't see what the original prices were so not sure if they're good deals??

Hmm, seems the links for the HP Laptops on their site are a bit mucked up.

    @Only,
Looked over the specs on both the Compaq and he HP netbooks, neither have a dvd drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,228 ✭✭✭Scruff

any of those have a better display than 1024x600?

Hi ya, yeah, am wondering if I should sacrafice the dvd drive in order to have a smaller size and just take the separate dvd player with me when travellinr OR should I go for the 15.6" one and that would negate the need for the dvd player .... can't seem to decide:o

Depends on what kind of travelling a 15.6" generally won't open fully one the airplane table makes using it impractical. Also for travelling I'd say battery life is king. Beware though a lot of those cheap smaller ones can't even do fullscreen video in any kind of a useful way. If you got one with good graphics you could stick a few divx movies on and not worry about the dvd player.

CPW's website is awful, It shows stock available for multiple stores then when you give them a call they have none

Didn't think of that Paddy ... it would be really for airplane travelling we would need the dvd ... so am probably looking at doing a smallish notebook and taking the dvd player with me ... wouldn't be able to fit the amount of dvds I'd need onto the hard drive I'd say - and not to mention I wouldn't have a clue how to do it anyways:o:o
Any of the ones on CPH any good for what I'm looking for - mainly internet browsing with a tiny bit of word thrown in now and again?

You'll certainly find it hard to find a cheaper netbook than the Compaq they're offering, but at the same time the Compaq is quite a cheap product anyway. It's hard to know with it, because I'd be wary of it's long term reliability, but if you were to look after it well, then it could well end up being a bargain at that price :)

Similarly the Asus for a full sized laptop is also very very cheap and finding a 15.6" lappy new for less than €250 is not an easy thing to do. Asus has been one of the best cheap laptop manufacturers too and their lappy's seem to have a very high build quality.
It does have a dual-core processor (which is pretty much equal to the processor in the HP btw), but they seem to have really skimped on the battery(cpw says only 2.5hrs) and hard drive space which is only 160GB :o

One thing is for sure with all the lappy offerings from CPW and that is to ignore their RRP prices completely. The HP is pretty much at it's right price at €299 and the Asus although very cheap has really a very small hard drive and battery life. The Asus is a wee bit cheaper than you'd expect to pay for a new laptop with a dual-core processor, the specs won't do for everyone though. It'd be great for your granny :D

imo, out of the laptops the Asus is the better value of the two, but only if you can live with the lack of a decent battery & hard drive space. Both would benefit from an RAM upgrade too.

I reckon the HP is worth the extra 50 Euro if you intending to get some good use out of it..

CPU is a little faster, Bigger hard drive and allot more battery life

What are you talking about? Any standard divx or xvid files would play perfectly fine on any of those laptops fullscreen. You'd only encounter a problem if you're referring to HD video, because the processor would struggle unless any of them have a card capable of decoding HD. But as far as your average 700mb dvdrip goes...it's nothing to do with the graphics card. Hardly too taxing for any of those machines.

Not sure what you mean by, "Good use", also any benchmarks I've seen have suggested that the Celeron in the Asus is faster, albeit only a wee bit.

As I said before the Asus is not for everyone, but it would be better for someone who's counting the pennies and won't need much battery life or hard drive space. A good laptop for people who might just be looking for something to check their email and browse the web, but won't be consuming a lot of media :)

    They're all equally slow xD

Don't get the eMachines though, they are the cheapest of the cheap spin off brand and not recommended.

If I were you I'd probably take the chance on the Compaq simply because it's cheaper or get a different model altogether than the three here.

Hard drive space on these models is quite poor with only 160GB, so space for movies & music could fill up quickly if you have a decent sized library.

Keep in mind with netbooks, that they'll be perfectly apt machines for surfing the web & creating documents, but beyond that they will be quite slow.
Multi-tasking doesn't work so well with them, although that being said there are dual-core netbooks going around every now and then for ~€230.

I actually use a single core netbook at the moment and I must say I was very suprised and impressed with how nippy it is. That being said, I've disabled a lot of the start-up programs and services which for most people would be slowing their machines down and it also runs Windows XP... If you do decide to get a netbook, try get one of your nerdy mates to do something similar, because especially with Windows 7, the measly 1GB of ram which comes as standard in these machines will be a pretty big obstacle to an enjoyable user experience.

thanks Effluo for the info , i dono what to do now im pretty confused , think il just get my laptop screen fixed thought getting a netbook would be cheaper but i dont think their for me .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 913 ✭✭✭Tazium

It's the amount of crap that comes preloaded that ruins the experience. 1GB for Windows 7 is fine with some tuning and service disabling etc. But I'd normally start by formatting and re installing the OS. Not into the de-crapifier type of products.

Most of the netbooks support 2GB of RAM, by either replacing the single slot 1GB module or adding a second 1GB module to a second slot.

150 quid for the Compaq is a good price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭thecornflake

Picked up the compaq for 150e yesterday, twas the last in stock in that particular shop. Salesman said they were selling fast as you would expect. I haven't turned it on yet as it's not for me its actually for someone else.

The keyboard however looks nice compared to most netbooks. The screen has a rather large looking black frame which i don't think looks good but you can't argue with the price. Most of these netbooks are the same and that's all they're mainly good for, internet word ect.

    Thanks OP.
