Biology First Year arts - Benefits?

Hey guys new to Maynooth and starting an Arts Course in a week or two and dead excited about it.

A question I've had on my mind is whether to study biology or not. Is there any benefits to gain from it seeing as you have to give it up after first year?

Does it offer something similar to Psychology in that the top thirty people in the class are offered a transfer to a course in a similar area?

Does it give you any benefits in studying something in Biology as a postgraduate?

And last but not least if anyone has done Biology in arts can you tell me a little about it. Is it worth while etc?

    Thanks :)

I don't think you can transfer to second year Biology if you do well in first year Arts. I looked at the two course pages (Biology through Arts and Biology denominated) in the prospectus and Biology with Arts appears to be missing one or two modules, which wouldn't help.

I would probably only recommend it if you are absolutely sure about your other two choices and are picking Biology because you liked it but couldn't see a possible career path in it.

For a postgraduate degree you might be able to do a course that has some elements of Biology but isn't highly emphasised by the subject. Taking Biology in first year will help you to gain some understanding of a few areas, which could be relevant to your postgrad.

Maybe contact the department, their email should be on the course page or the undergraduates prospectus.
