My PC has insomnia!

My PC can't seem to go to sleep or hibernate. Every time I put it to sleep, it wakes up on its own after 2-3mins and then if you leave it alone, it goes back to sleep after 15 or so mins and then wakes back up again after a few mins and it keeps doing this.

Does anyone know why my PC can't seem to go to sleep?
Its a windows 7 if it helps...

    Cheers.

Turn your ridiculously over-sensitive mouse upside down.

I don't know if its just the mouse though cuz I don't even touch the thing and it wakes up out of sleep mode... And its not a very sensitive mouse either. Its just a cheapo mouse I found lying around my house...

I'll see if turning the mouse upside down makes any difference...

Could also be your network card or another piece of hardware...

Full instructions here (Including how to find out what's waking the computer) http://www.cravingtech.com/fix-windows-vista7-sleep-mode-from-waking-up-by-itself.html

My pc is still waking up by itself so I followed the instructions on the link you gave me and this is what I got:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Users\Af>powercfg -lastwake
    Wake History Count - 1
    Wake History [0]
    Wake Source Count - 1
    Wake Source [0]
    Type: Device
    Instance Path: USB\ROOT_HUB20\4&36206eee&0
    Friendly Name:
    Description: USB Root Hub
    Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)

    C:\Users\Af>powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
    HID Keyboard Device
    ASMedia XHCI Controller
    ASMedia XHCI Controller (001)
    USB Root Hub (002)
    USB Root Hub (003)
    Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection
    HID-compliant mouse (002)

Now I don't know much about computers so all of that makes little sense to me but could ye guys help me figure out what it is that keeps waking my PC back up from sleep and how can I stop it waking my PC up from sleep??

    Thanks.

Try hibernating instead, I find it a lot quicker than a full shutdown/bootup.

How do you hibernate on Win 7?
I can't find the option anywhere...

Go start, beside shut down, click the arrow. Should be there.

Its not there. I've only got "switch user", "log off", "lock", "restart" and "sleep".
    There's no option for hibernate.

    Might be disabled. Run:

    powercfg -h on

    from an elevated command prompt.

It says I do not have permission to enable or disable hibernate function... :(
Like I've only got the one account on my pc so its not like I'm working from a guest or non-admin account...

Does it not give you an option to run as admin?

Check your drivers. I put XP onto a laptop for someone recently, and it didn't give the hibernate tab in Power Properties until after I'd installed the ACPI driver. Might be worth a look.

Did you run the command prompt as an admin (via the right-click menu) before sending the command?

OK, I ran cmd as an admin and typed in that and well... nothing happened.... Everything's still the same...

Yep, getting no response is normal. Do you have the Hibernate option on your Start menu now? It's in the same place as Restart and Sleep.

My W7 64 bit system wouldn't go to sleep either, and after trying all instructions known to mankind, I couldn't cure it. I only discovered by accident that it was because I had a USB3 hard-drive caddy connected to the USB3 interface, and this was preventing sleep-mode.

I suppose there's some way of setting USB3 to allow the computer to sleep, but I haven't looked into it yet.

try it in safe mode to rule out apps

    try with ALL perhipherals removed

note WoL packets can wake up network cards , modems can also wake PC's so try without cables if all else fails

really weird would be if it set an alarm to wake itself up, (just mentioning because it's technically possible but totally improbable)
