Just wondering do people do this alot? i tend to hitch myself but I dont think I'd pick up someone on the side of the road? I think I get picked up because I'm only 18 so I'm of no harm to the driver :L

I pick em up sometimes, depending on the look of them.

Used to hitch around the place when i was younger though, great way of getting from a to b and you meet some interesting characters!

Never see any on the road. Was offered a lift last week when I left work in the rain by a old man, didnt take it since I was walking to my car, but was such a nice feeling being offered a lift by a complete strafed. Am 28 and tall so doubt he was after my ass

    Not really.

I always pick them up if I can, don't really hitch myself but have done in the past when I was travelling abroad, good way to get around and meet people.

I don't really see hitch hikers now, not as common as it used to be.
I picked up someone recently but only because my passenger knew them.

I see one or two a week maybe a group of 2 the odd time. It is certainly a dying trend.

I would not see one a week, buses are so cheap now and safer.

Used to hitch lifts in my younger days the odd time before I got motoring. It did tend to be fellas who would give you a lift. Younger fellas in particular were very good to stop and give you a lift. Sometimes older women weren't bad to give me a lift also but more often they would be locals who knew me.

Had a bad enough experience of giving a friend a lift home from a pub not long after I started driving. Friend was grand but they asked could I give a friend of theirs a lift when I got there...Was in that situation where I couldn't really say no. That guy sat in the back of my car and basically acted the maggot. Wouldn't let me or our mutual friend know where his house was. Our mutual friend had an rough idea but I hadn't a clue. In the end dropped him at a house my friend thought was his or near to it anyway. What do you do in a situation like that...if you drop them off along the road and their struck by a car well.... I was saying to myself try and bear in mind I'm trying to do you a favour buster.

Also a lot of the people I see tumbing lifts tend to be those camping eco warrior types and there often tends to be at least two with enough baggage to fill a small trailer....Hence I tend to motor on past.

I give lifts all the time unless the hitcher looks dodgy or my gut tells me otherwise. Doesn't cost me a thing. Would hate to see it dying out through fear or general selfishness.

I give lifts all the time. Then I eat their livers with fava beans and a nice chianti.

I don't drive, but I've hitched, generally only around where I grew up so it's people who know me who give me a lift. It's in the rural West so you couldn't be relying on buses really. My mam picks them up a lot but usually only when she's not on her own in the car. She drives from north Clare to Galway city for work, so it's usually backpackers or hippies, I've had some lovely hippie chats with her hitch-hikers. She used to hitch from Donegal to Dublin or Cork () to see my dad before she could drive so I think she's just paying the karma back

Used to hitch all over the place when I was a student in Galway and later in Edinburgh so now I always pick up my successors. Like the previous poster I'd hate to see it die out because of fear.
