DVD backup and Mac

    Hope i'm posting in the right place. I've just managed to get the streaming working from my Mac to a new Panasonic BluRay player via Twonky media. I'd like to back up my (legally purchased) DVDs to the Mac to stream them. Looking for a basic push-button interface software which can do it (preferably shareware/freeware).

    I don't entirely understand your set-up, but I use Handbrake to create mp4 files (and other formats) from my discs. In particular, I use it to convert DVDs to files I can view on my iPad and iPhone.

    RipIt is good for ripping DVDs. Very simple to use.

    Thanks for the replies. Is MP4 the best format to back them up to? I backed one up, but there is a very slight glitch every few seconds.

    Not necessarily. That is the format you'd get if you downloaded from the Apple Store. You'll pull out the main movie and lose everything else.

    Ripping programmes like MacTheRipper (and I assume RipIt) create a duplicate of the DVD files. You can play these in the DVD app and get the menus, etc., and can create an exact copy of the physical disk. If you want an EXACT copy, that would be the better choice.

    When I moved from the States, I made regionless, physical copies of my collection so they could be played anywhere. MacTheRipper was invaluable for this.

    I'm less concerned now about backups, and more interested in portability to multiple devices. The main movie/track is all I care about.

    I would agree. The Panasonic BluRay player only plays DivX or MKV, it would appear.

    Cool. Handbrake can create MKV, so once you get the glitch sorted, you should be all set.
