Can't find a download page for vista. I can download Vista Business form MSDN, if i recall correctly, using the key i have for home premium should work and install home premium only. Or is that XP/7?

Your key for Home Premium will only work with home premium. Is it an OEM key or full retail key?

I am not sure in your case but i had a laptop that i was fixing for someone. I used their Vista home key for Windows 7 home and it worked.

Microsoft don't give consumers the option to download XP.

They do for newer OS's but not for XP.

While you are allowed one backup copy of an OS, this doesn't cover torrenting etc.

    posts snipped.

The done thing now is System Builders will buy OEM DVDs and create a backup, or keep the DVD as their backup. Same for straight retail purchasers of the full license or Upgrade version.

People buying new PCs will in pretty much all cases get a recovery partition and shortly after setting up their PC will be prompted to create the Recovery Discs from blanks. A lot of people don't do this, or don't do it right, and get screwed in the end. If you don't want to spend the money either having the selling party create the discs for you (PC World, Best Buy) then make sure as hell you do it yourself or you'll end up trying to torrent it (and there are plenty of viruses out there on the subject from my experience) or ordering a disc from the OEM like Dell/HP, or going back to the shop to buy an OS Disc off the shelf for much more expense.
