Dell charger LED goes out when plugged in = motherboard blown?

My DELL XPS 1530 laptop switched off last night and I presumed the problem was with the charger. However, I note today that if I plug the adaptor in, the green LED comes on. However, when I then plug it into the laptop, the LED goes off and nothing happens. Does this indicate the laptop has a problem rather than the charger?

Not really. There's no load on the charger until you plug it in. The problem could be with the socket or charger. The likelihood seems to be that the charger is busted and the battery drained as a result. Do you know anyone with a similar charger? Try other power sockets. I wouldn't rule out the charger at all.

More than likely its the charger. Had the same problem with a 1510 vostro during the week. I changed the charger, but the battery overheated after an hour. I took off the charger and ran on battery power for all of the ten seconds it gave me. I did a bios update and downloaded ALL the drivers from dell including a "vista power scheme". Laptop is working great with the new charger and getting over 3 hours on the battery.

most of the time its the board sending the charge back and the charger led goes out , very odd time its the charger, if you can get your hands on the loan of a charger go for it

Very little chance that is charger issue, but check it. Connect your charger into other dell or connect other charger to your laptop.

Charger led goes off because of protection. You have short on mainboard (not dc socket) in power circuit. It's repairable.

Ta for advice; will try to find charger for it in work tomorrow. If not, will probably head up to Back to the Future,
