Looking at one of these as a contender for insurance reasons but don't really know much about them other then their based of the 106.

Anybody know what their like and if the 1.1 8v unit is of any use for a run-around ?

I've always assumed that Citroen were/are a well built French car and far superior then Renault or am I wrong ?

sorry i meant to post on this yesterday,

i have a saxo, i have it 4 years now and have had no major trouble (touch wood) some small niggly things like the rear window demister not working and the indicator switch (i think) making blooding clicking noises for no reason,
the clutch went when i first got it but i think that was more my learner driving:o

parts are fairly cheap, tyres are cheap (€250 for 4 michelin)
i have no idea what mpg it gets tbh, but it seems good on fuel,

a good car to use around town, as its tiny, easy to park with good visibility,

it has french built quality though so on rough roads everything dosent seem that well put together:)

a lot of them i see have been badly modified though and i would assume thrashed,
if you could find a yaris or fiesta for around the same money though i would look at them, i have read a lot of horror stories of unreliable saxo`s but as said i dont have much problems
    sorry about the massive post!

    Thanks for the reply man.

Yeah that's the good thing about a lot of sub 1.4 cars, parts can be quite cheap to repair/replace if anything goes wrong.

MPG isn't really an issue although over 40 for urban driving would be nice.

It's only being a week since I start looking at them on Donedeal and have noticed that there are quite a few modified ones with the most common modification being that the suspension is lowered, which is a big put off. :o

I was originally looking at the Fiesta but for insurance reasons I have to look at anything sub 1.1. Although having said that even insurance quotes for a 1.0 Micra are similar with the 1.25 Fiesta.

Just reading Honest John about this car and I see that they came with two years free insurance back in the day.

Does anybody know if this was only in the UK or ROI as well ?

The reviews seem to be leaning more towards the bad side which is making me reconsider now.

The buddy bought one new or almost new in 1997, he had it until 2005 or so, never any problems with it. There is some common enough issue with the shoes and drums that make the handbrake impossible to release, a lad going out with the sister years ago encountered that on his 106.

Tiny car though, Fiesta Zetec would be a lot better.

They do look small alright. I'd be curious to see the interior space difference between them and a Micra which is decent enough for a car of its size.

I did have my heart set on the Fiesta until I was at a Chill.ie kiosk a few weeks ago having a chat with someone who quoted me over €3000 with Asgard Insurance . That's 18 years old, 2001 1.25 Fiesta Zetec, Full Licence and previous named driver experience.

I've yet to give my current insurer Aviva a ring as they won't quote me under the assumption on me having a full licence which I hope to have in a few weeks fingers crossed for legal reasons. I'm hoping I get something decent of them as the house, and two other cars are with them as well as me getting a **** load of lessons from them too.
