Car remote control alarm unit not working

The remore control unit on my car keyring has stopped working, so I can't open or lock car doors. Of course, I've changed the battery but still not working. Main dealer says the electronics have gone faulty. Problem is, a new unit costs €140. The key still operates the ignition, just won't unlock/lock doors. Can the electronics be checked out and possibly be repaired?

Do you know if the alarm was a factory fit from new in the car or was it added later? Is there any brand name on the remote control? Most can be reprogrammed from a blank remote that you pick up on the likes of Ebay, once your key is working in the ignition it should be possible to do.

The key is, as far as I know, an original. The key swings out when a small button is pressed, as is very common. The case it came in when I bought the car second-hand was not holding the 'swing-out' key very well, so I bought a new case on Ebay and got the main dealer to move the electronics from the old key into the new case together with the key part. The dealer then programmed the key to the ignition etc and all was fine for a few months. Then the electronics stopped working, as I said above.
I'd like to have the electronics in the key sorted preferably, a new key is so expensive.
