    Hi,

I was talking to a guy in work today who mentioned that he often records conversations he has with others without their knowledge (Doctor appointments, work meetings, etc).
Needless to say, i'll be watching what i say around him in future!! :)

Is this legal or does he have to inform the other party in advance?

Also, does the same rule apply for videoing people without their knowledge?
(I read somewhere that its illegal to video people (or maybe just police?).

    Thanks,

It's illegal to record a phone conversation unless both parties are aware that it's being recorded, hence the message when you phone a call centre that 'calls are (or may be) recorded for training and monitoring purposes'.

    Not sure about other situations.

    Thanks for the response.

Are phone calls and face to face conversations treated in the same manner from a legal perspective?
i.e. In a face to face conversation, does the other party have to be told they are being recorded in advance?

Illegal according to what law? How come a Det. Supt. Recovered substantial damages from a newspaper who claimed he had illegally recorded a conversation? He had a recording device on his own phone which is legal. He was not obliged to inform the other parties to conversations.
