    It has JUST been brought up, that if i hold a medical card, I dont have to pay the €200 government levy fee.
    I've been searching the last hour, trying to find information on it, and I cant find anything. Granted I may just be too tired.
    So, am I exempt from the €200 government fee if I have a medical card?
    Thanks in advance.

    Theres a government fee on my level 6course fee this year, and its €200 on top of my course fee.
    From my acceptance email; "The full examination/certification/registration fee for 2011/2012 (inclusive of deposit €40 and Government Levy of €200) is €678 (€478 + €200 Government Levy)."
    I was told that in the Cavan institute the €200 is looked after by the government if you have a medical card.

    crikey i haven't heard of anything like this before - still waiting for my correspondance from my college so will see if there is anything like this on it.

    It looks as if you're right!

    From http://www.cavaninstitute.ie/documents/policies/plc_capitation.pdf

    Eligible Participants
    9. Any learner who enrols on an approved PLC course is eligible to pay the €200 PLC programme participant contribution.
    10. The contribution is an annual contribution. Eligible participants on PLC courses of
    more than one year’s duration must pay the contribution for each year of that course.
    11. The following categories of participant are exempt from paying the contribution:
    • Full medical card holders in their own right and their dependent children;

    • Those who are eligible under the student grant scheme;
    • Those in receipt of the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) or Vocational
    Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) allowances

    This Exemption is only valid for people pursuing PLC courses, so if someone with a medical card is enrolling in NUI Galway (for example):

    http://www.nuigalway.ie/student_fees/faq.html

    How much is the Student Levy in 2011/12? €224. How much is the Student Contribution Charge in 2011/12? €2,000.

    I have just completed my leaving Certificate and received a CAO offer of Arts at NUI Galway. I have a medical card – how much do I have to pay? Assuming you are eligible for ’free fees’ you pay €2,224.

    I am assuming that Level 6 is classed as a PLC - it's just a higher level & more advanced course, though I honestly don't know for sure.

    I am a PLC teacher and we were given the following information in a staff meeting this week that should clear this up:

    The PLC Government Levy was introduced in the 2010 budget, it goes into effect for all students who start a PLC year in 2011. This fee is for all courses offered by PLC colleges. If you attended a level 5 course last year and are continuing to a level 6 course this year you must pay the charge. Until last year the Government paid this charge on behalf of all PLC students.

    Am I exempt from the €200 PLC government levy?

    Some people will be exempt from the fee - Medical card holders, Grant holders, people in receipt of BTEA or VTOS allowances.

    What evidence do I need to present?

    Medical card : if you are a medical card holder in your own right (or a dependent child) you must produce your medical card which must be in date. If your card has expired or is about to expire an interim letter from the HSE will be accepted as proof.

    Grant: Your official acknowledgement letter that you have ben approved for the grant. A receipt of application will not be accepted.

    BTEA : You must produce a letter of approval.

    VTOS : the college has a complete list of who is on VTOS and the exemption will be automatically applied.

    This information is true for my VEC center anyway, but double check with the admin office in your particular college if you have a query.

    I will call the college in the morning, I ahve a valid medical card, and am going to be a VTOS or a BTEA applicant as well, so by rights i should be fine.
    But still, thank you very much for this info it helped alot. :)

    Yeah pay it and then you will get a refund

    It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
