What works? What backfires? Share your tips and war stories!

I had a guy come and look at my reasonably priced, clean but honest, 9 year old bike today. He got down on his hands and knees and nit-picked my bike apart. He cribbed about absolutely everything he could think of < but we both know he wants it >. He made an optimistic offer because of a, b, c, d.... and z. I refused but we parted on good terms. Then the texts started!

He came out with 'I'm going to see another one tomorrow' and 'let me know if you can accept my offer- I could buy another one tomorrow' etc. I'm now in the process of convincing him he "really probably wants a better bike" and saying "look- I'll be very pleased if you come across a better one tomorrow" etc. He keeps asking my bottom line and I keep telling him to look at other bikes!!

Personally, I wouldn't even reply to his texts, if he wants it he'll buy it.

I would have told this fella to take a hike by now, this "I could buy another one tomorrow" crap is annoying and pointless.

I dont sell cars too often, but when I do I dont entertain any sh!te from potential buyers, they can nit pick and tyre kick all they like.

I name my price and they can either buy the car or not buy the car it makes no difference to me, if your bike is reasonably priced you'll easily find a buyer who won't be pestering you with this crap.

I remember a lad texting me offering me pool tables and all sorts as a p/x (that i had advertised as no p/x ) for a car, and you get the odd person ringing telling you their life story etc.

I dont envy car dealers or auto breakers one bit.

You have to be firm yet polite with some folk. The lad you mention wants your bike :) Next time he asks for your bottom line tell him to make an offer.

He is trying to play hard ball with you. Stick to your guns and he can either take it or leave it. You will most likely find someone else soon anyway :).

    Yeah totally.
Text the guy back and say fine yeah look at another one I have another interested viewer wait for a bit and then see him get back to you.

A couple of years ago I was selling my car, people would test drive and do exactly this. After 2 "ready to give a deposit tomorrow " types who you never hear from again. I decided then to say only make me an offer if you have the cash in your pocket right now.

You get rid of pointless hagglers and tyre kickers who have no intention of purchasing.

If I am buying ( I have bought 2 new cars in the last 10 years I do my homework. I have no problem phoning or visiting 10-15 dealers, learn all I can about the product, then settle on the car, then whittle it down to 2 or 3 dealers based on how I was treated and how they operated.

I bought a new car in May, I went with the dealer who took their time over 2 visits.

June 2008 I wandered into a Toyota dealers, chatted to the salesman, I told him my aunt was looking for a new car for spring 2009. He spent 15 mins with me and showed the small cars. I told him we were not sure what brand she was even buying yet.

May 2009 she decided on a yaris, went back in and did the deal. He matched our best price too.

Small things can make the difference.

The amount of bad salespeople I met this year was shocking.
My favourite was the guy in nissan liffey valley

Me. Looking for low tax band A estate. Have a great quote from next door on a grand megane 1.5 dci dynamique.

Salesman: Renault have problems with their engines

Me: its the same engine thats in the fu6kin quasqai behind you

    Salesman: gulp ehmmm, ahhhhhh

I laughed my arse off, and strolled out the door.
