Season 2 storyline realistic

Just finished watching Season 2 of the wire.

Is the Season 2 storyline realistic?
I.e. the smuggling of women in containers cross-alantic shipping from Europe for prostition common?
Have there been cases of people dieing in containers like that in ports in USA?
Is it based on true stories or did they just sex up the dockers story?

Sex trafficking to the United States does happen but isn't as prevalent as in Europe. As far as I know (I'm no expert on the subject), much of it comes from Central America and South East Asia rather than Eastern Europe and a lot of them are flown in on tourist visas and have their passports taken away rather than smuggled in via shipping containers. But as I said, I could be completely wrong.

No, I wouldn't say it's common for people in containers to be shipped across the Atlantic

Easier to bring up up from Mexico over the border
Or as said, fly people in on visas and then take their passports

Don't think they were ever referred to as a 'mafia'? Just a criminal organisation headed by a guy known as 'The Greek', and as said above, he isn't even Greek!

Sure, Sergei was Ukranian, Eton was Israeli, Nick Sobotka was Polish American, White Mike is Irish American while the Greek and Spiros could literally be from anywhere.

Interestingly some website (maybe wiki) concluded that the Greek was probably Cypriot or Pontic Greek (Georgia/Crimea) in origin due to the fact that he did actually speak Greek on several occasions.

As a viewer they look pretty greek to me?

Yeah but the the point is that since he does speak Greek but says that 'I amn't Greek' (nationality), then he's probably from Cyprus. This would also explain his hostility to the Turkish captain.

The character actually says to Spiros, while in a hotel room as they plan their escape from Baltimore, that he isn't Greek.
