USB TV tuner card that works?

I bought 2 USB TV Tuner devices from Maplin. Neither worked for me. I have an old Hauppauge TV card for a PC (PCI card). I can plug my cable (UPC) into it and I can get the channels (analogue). I can also plug an old VCR into it and stream the video tape.

What USB one should I buy that can do the same? I don't really understand the different encoding. It would be nice if it did Digital TV (UPC) also, but its not a must.

I've always found them highly unreliable and never really got one working, with everything switching to digital I doubt they put much effort into them.

Streaming is a viable alternative, I use a site that has most of the major UK and US channels streamed (illegally so I won't post a link) and you can get all the Irish channels on www.magnetwebtv.ie, but once you have a good divx site and don't mind waiting a day for content I find that the best way to go about it.

The vast majority of USB TV sticks you'll find these days will be DVB-T only, so it's no wonder you don't get anything from your UPC cable connection. Even if you could find a USB DVB-C stick it wouldn't work with the UPC digital channels anyway (these can only be received with the official UPC boxes.)

A DVB-T stick will work fine for the reception of Saorview digital TV through an aerial, and depending on where you are, you may get away with a small indoor aerial, or even the supplied 'stick' aerial.

To receive the analogue signal from your UPC cable you'll need an analogue USB TV stick. I don't recall seeing many of those about but there are some so-called hybrid sticks about that do both DVB-T and analogue, so that may be the best bet.

What exactly is not working? Will the software not run, are you not seeing picture, not hearing audio..?

I had one and it worked really well..

I suspect he's trying to use a DVB-T tuner on UPC cable which won't work.
