Hotspot using the Android in Dublin

I am in Perth, Australia and coming to Dublin. I hear that maybe service providers in Eire do not allow the use of the Hotspot facility to broadcast your GPRS connection built into the Android phones if I buy a sim card over there.

I was aware that the Iphone in some countries are stopped from doing this , but I am unsure if in fact in Ireland is it not allowed and more to the point if that is true how can they control it, it would seem difficult to do so via an Android phone.

If I can get the real facts on this it would be much appreciated.

Don't worry you can use your Android as a hotspot in Ireland.

Since posting my original message and receiving the reply above I am now told that in Ireland if you do not pay extra to allow "tethering" (hotspot use in this case)...you have to pay the service provider extra, at least if you are with Vodafone and one other provider whose name I cannot recall.

I therefore wonder , assuming this is correct, how can they monitor this if you are using an Android phone, you may be broadcasting your GPRS connection to another phone, an Ipad or whatever - how can they enforce this restriction , assuming what I am told is correct.

    Any responses would be appreciated.

I'm with Vodafone. I use my Android as a hotspot and pay no more.

I think what you heard about was for the iPhone. They have to pay more, but Apple users generally don't mind :D

    I had a bit of a read.

I'm using a bill pay phone.

This post shows the difference between the APNs.
    http://forum.vodafone.ie/index.php?/topic/4268-differences-between-apns/

The APN I use is hs.vodafone.ie
So it looks like my tethering just comes out of my 1Gb limit.

But from this it looks like a prepaid user is stuck on live.vodafone.com
    http://www.vodafone.ie/terms/mobileinternet/tariff/

    So they probably can't tether.

Can anybody confirm or deny if this is correct.

You will be fine. Tether away.

I'm on bill pay with voda, and on the live APN, and can confirm that tethering works at no extra charge on a Desire.

With the iphone, the APN is hardcoded into the setup files to use the office APN, which is not included in your data bundle, hence the extra charge. However, if you jailbreak the iphone you can then modify the tethering APN to the live one, and it'll come out of your bundle at no extra charge.
