This reply will be rather biased - I love Austria and especially Obertauern - but I am a creature of habit - and stay in the same Hotel & visit the same huts/bars :o.

It's a big village (long) with lost of hotels, restaurants, bars. There's loads of different types of accomodation - from apartments, chalets to 5 star hotels. My only personal experience is the Hotel Gamsleiten - can't fault, and the Schutz, where friends have stayed and they love.

Ski in/Ski out - the resort is pretty much designed for this - depending on what hotel you pick. We stay at Hotel Gamsleiten - and the lift is c. 20 meters from the hotel ski room, and you can ski back to the door.

Apres - Typical Austrian Apres - happy hour's about 4-6. Plenty of bars, apres ski umbrella huts at bottom of most lifts, main area is centered half way down Edelweis Run in the middle of the village, where the night skiing takes place twice a week. The 2 main popular bars are located there too. There are 2 night clubs, I think. I was there twice last year - early January - found it fairly quiet (which was fab. for skiing), and mid Feb - when it was hopping.

Groups - can't really say - as the most I've gone with is 4. That said, the resort is designed in such a way that all runs tend towards the village, so it's easy enough to meet up. Easy to pick a favourite umbrella bar, and bump into each other randomly throughout the day. The lift queues are minimal except weekends, especially after lunch at the Edelweis lift.

It wouldn't be the most active, apres ski wise - it's only a big village. The resort attracts a lot of Germans/Austrians, especially families, also plenty English. I would suggest it's more suitable for groups of mixed ages and abilities, rather than a lads week on the pull :pac:

Transfer from Salzburg - c. 1 and 1/4 hours, if you go by taxi. If you are going with travel agent in a coach, expect up to 2 hours given there's bound to be plenty of stops on the way. About 40 minutes on motorway, balance on climb to resport.
