Confused about something that happened in Hotmail / Windows Live

I recently looked at my Windows Live profile and saw that someone I had sent a friend request to ages ago had accepted my request. This was someone I hadn't talked to in over a year so I sent them an email asking how they had been.

Today I got a reply to my email. However they said I must have them mixed up with someone else and that they didn't know me but had accepted my friend request anyway. Apparently this was a totally different person with the same user name as my friend that I hadn't talked to in ages.

I'm seriously confused. This person had been on my list of Live Messenger contacts for over two years (although we didn't appear as friends on each others profiles). Is there any way that two different people could have the same Hotmail / Live Messenger name? Also could this person that I don't know have gotten any offline messages I may have sent to my friend?

I hope this makes sense. Also sorry if I'm posting this is in the wrong forum.
