Does anyone use those suction pumps for the oil that you stick down through the filler cap? I'd be able to service my Golf in about 5 mins if they were any good??

To me it just seems like you would be leaving dregs in the sump but hope i am wrong because it would be a quick job with it alright.I think i read here before that some of the main stealers are using pumps.

Don't get one. Do it the old fashioned way and do it right.

I had plumes of bluey-white smoke coming from the exhaust of the car after the last service and copped that it was an oil over fill.

Mechanic was on hols so I went to the pet shop and bought about 2 meters of aquarium pump pipe (about €2.50) stuck it down where the dip stick goes and syphoned out about a litre of oil.

+1 and they are 70 odd quid plus they are a dirty looking yoke after a while. Only takes a few mins to whip of the sump guard and open the Plug.

Spend less time cleaning your headcloth LM..:pac:

I have one that I hook up to a air-compressor and even at that it takes ages to drain plus I wouldn't be sure you'd get everything out. I've used it once for draining oil. I'd prefer the old fashioned way. I just keep it in case I ever overfill.

Opening the plug never gets all the gunk out anyway. Any time I've dropped the sump in a tdi vw it always has a load of **** left behind. This is due to the location of the plug hole. Problem with the suction method on a vw tdi is the dipstick tube leads to the front of the sump, and the sump has a slight drop towards the rear, so you will never get as much out as by opening the plug (I guess you could park on a downward slope though). I'm not against them, and if you are using one make sure the oil is hot so it comes out easier and obviously open the filter first. Good thing about the vw tdi is the dipstick tube is a bit wider than most.

Most thing I'd warn you of is this. When you've got a car over a pit or on a lift to change oil it gives you an opportunity to have a good look around underneath. If you're taking the handy way out it may cause you to miss something important.
