Election (27.10.2011) polling station work: apply now!

In order to avoid paranoid and ridiculous posts like this on this forum, could all those people who wish to work in a polling station put their applications in to the Electoral Office in their constituency now?

As I made clear in the above thread, I got work in a polling station for the first time in the last election. I didn't know anybody; I merely googled the name of my local election officer and applied to her. Consequently, as is the practice the local Election Officer sent me a letter which I received today asking me if I am interested in working in the forthcoming Presidential Election on 27 October 2011. If I am, the deadline for notifying her office of my interest is 14 September 2011.

And, by the way, instead of €500 plus for working as a polling clerk as claimed by the thread starter above, I received around €268 after tax for being in the polling station for 16 hours. So much for the reality.

You've all being notified so no misguided "begrudgery" about polling clerks and the position being a "closed shop" when you didn't even bother applying.

I've never once heard these positions advertised in the media. By virtue of that in itself, could it not be argued that when the only people who are largely aware of these positions are those who have previously filled these vacancies, the the positions are essentially closed, when people who have not done these before are unaware that the vacancies actually exist???

Have to google a bit more, ronano. What constituency is Julianstown in? Although in Co Meath, it seems from this google that it is in Louth Constituency; more specifically it and St Mary's in Drogheda have recently been moved from Meath East into Louth according to this RTÉ report.

So now you need the name of the County Registrar for Louth. Another quick google and it seems her name in December 2010 was Mairéad Ahern.

Sure enough another search, this time for "Mairéad Ahern" and "Louth", and she's still recorded as the County Registrar for Louth. Ring her/her office at this number and ask for the procedure for applying to do polling clerk, or the count or whatever it is you want to do.

Google has all the answers! :D

PS: Do not forget to follow up your application form with, if necessary, a couple of phonecalls/emails/gentle reminders.
