When are new postgrads starting (i.e. research postgrads) does anyone know? Is it beginning of Sept or the same time as undergrads? As far as I know registration isn't till the 12th but are they due to start before this?

It's a little vaguer if you're a research postgrad. I'm moving up to Dublin on the 19th, but registering the previous week. My supervisor said she'll be free to meet "properly" for the first time in the third week of September, so that's when I think of myself as "starting".

Have either of you got anything in the post from Trinity with regards to registration or orientation? Also do either of you know anything about signing up for optional skills modules or what one's are likely to be available? I'm starting a PhD with the history department but its my first time in Trinity so am a little confused by the whole thing!
    Thanks

Continuing students should have gotten stuff in the post (I did and am about to submit PhD). Have you filled out any forms with the College at all yet? When I first started I had some but not all forms done so could not register on the allocated day. I know an important one needs to have a statement from academic referees. It can take time if they are in a different college, as yours would be, so maybe check with the Graduate Studies Office to see what you need. That's what I had to do. I'm a science geek so know nothing about the history dept, sorry!

Just got an email from course coordinator today. Lectures starting on 26 September (taught master's degree), with induction meeting the week before. Registration schedule for this semester is here :)

Am a new start Arts research postgrad at TCD- all i've got in terms of info is that reg week is next week and that there's an orientation lecture on fri 16th on campus? Am going to dub for the day to register earlier in the week, prob the tues, and then coming down properly when halls open to move my stuff in (coming from the north makes it easier to come up and down). I know NOTHING about the extended soft/optional skills training on offer other than the expectation is that we have to do some of it, fanilla ice, so if you hear anything please stick up the info!

Thanks for the help everyone! I haven't got any forms in the post or anything but I'm going to wait until I register next week and hopefully will find out about skills classes at the postgrad induction thing. I assume since we haven't heard anything that we don't need to do anything yet! A lot of the website seemed to be closed access without a TCD username and password so at least we'll have those next week so will be able to look stuff up properly. What department are you doing your postgrad with, Baldydrawnboy?

I'll be based in modern languages! I'm looking forward to getting down to Dublin, I've got into the habit over the years of doing not a tap of work when am at my parents' house and i've not done any of the reading/prep I had planned to over the summer..oops! :D

Ha I'm the exact same, meant to do loads of preparation work over the summer but just never got around it! Well I've been reading novels set in the period that I'll be researching but as my research has little to do with literature I think I'm really just procrastinating. I kind of figured that seeing as I'll be insanely busy for the next 3 to 4 years I might as well enjoy the summer :-) Still we'll have to get to work soon!

Sign me up as another one who did NONE of the reading he had planned to do over the summer.

In my defence a new season of Breaking Bad started so I was fairly busy.

I've decided i'm on holiday until i register and get a student card, at which stage i panic and have to start doing some work. aka stop procrastinating about what to bring with me and just get on with it :)

    What's Breaking Bad?

Was in the maths office today and technically research starts 1 september but in reality no one has really started yet.
