I've used the Penney's tube dress version of Spanx and found it really good. Only a couple of euro as well. My mam uses the ones from Marks and Spencers.

Problem with any of the suck- it-all-in knix is that they are a battle to get in or out of.So when you go to the loo, don't leave it too late or you may regret it!!

I have found that the size 8-10 knix in Pennys is too big if you are an 8 :(

but the size 8 camisoles are brilliant :D (but only really work if you are wearing trousers)

    damn them bellys :P

I spent in or around €40 on a pair of spanx for a wedding I had this summer- biggest waste of money ever! They did absolutely nothing and I was so disappointed because they had gotten such good reviews- I must be a weird shape or something! I definitely bought the right size for my measurements. I ended up having to wear it anyway because I would have had vpl without it, but as for sucking anything in- forget it!

I have a pull-everything-in type slip thing from Dunnes which is absolutely brilliant and only costs around €15- and no problems going to the toilet either because it's a slip. It's REALLY tight and hard to get on but it definitely does the job it's supposed to do! The only problem is, I can only ever find it in black & I'd love to get a nude coloured one. I bought it a size smaller than I am because I had another one my actual size and it wasn't that effective.

Authentic Spanx (not the own brand ones) are amazing - AMAZING - at spare tire/belly control! I bought mine in Debenhams 5 years ago for a wedding and they are still going strong (granted, they don't get much use but they are still intact and suck all the wobbly bits in!). The problem with Pennys ones, and other cheapy ones, are they are super sweaty and not very breathable so you end up trapped with a layer of sweat between you and the fabric (not too comfortable or appealing) and they can be a bit inconsistent on "the holding everything" in front. I have heard M&S own brand version are not too bad sweaty wise and they work really well (I have seen the before and after with my own eyes!), plus are a bit cheaper than real Spanx. Trinny and Suzannah (from "What Not To Wear") have their own version that I have heard rave reviews about - comfortable, effective etc. - think I saw them in Debenhams but not 100% sure.

byhookorbycrook is totally right about the whole going to the loo issue - it may take you 10 minutes to get your self out and back into them again (without odd lumps and bumps!). Also, if your belly is a bit wobbly all over (as opposed to just the lower half) definitely go for the ones that end under the bra as opposed to the ones that end around the waist - the overhang can be worse than wearing nothing at all!

    Good luck!

+1 Have tried sooo many of the cheaper options and always go back to my Spanx. Its a half bodysuit thing like this:

I have a wedding to go to in Oct, also had a baby 10 weeks ago so have the oul jiggle belly! I want to buy a really good pair, might go for the spanx as I had a pair from dunnes which didnt really do
Much, they were just like a tight pair of knickers more than anything else

Not sure if you are anywhere near the TK Maxx in Carrickmines (Dublin, exit 15 off M50), but if you are they generally tend to have a good stock of control underwear there in the lingerie section, with plenty of different shapes i.e. knickers only to full spanx type, although not spanx brand but other quality ones. Spent 0ver 60 euros on spanx in BTs only to see all of these a week later was going mad! Worth checking out if you are on a budget

Kind of off topic but has anyone ever used the Spanx High Waist tights?
Need to wear dark tights with a dress I have and thinking they'd be a good solution!

I work in a lingerie department, in debenhams.

And.. spanx.. are the bane of my life.

People come in with unrealistic expectations, thinking spanx are going to make them look a size or two smaller  then they are when really, all they do is smooth out any lumps and bumps. That is all.

From working with all types of shape wear, spanx are mediocre even if that and are far too expensive, Imo, I would recommend corset shape wear such as this one:
    Debenhams waist nipper

    Or this maidenform one:
    Here

These really do smooth out, and find them to be brilliant.
And they are half the price of spanx!

Hi, ii bought the ones in pennys, didnt think they were great tbh, the poster who works in debenhams an reccomended the corset type things, well had a look at them and they look like they would be far better. Think im best of just getting to the gym tho, then i wont need these. But in the mean time think il try the waist nipper in debs. As i wont be wearing the pennys flat tum pants, they did nothing!

I'm so glad to read this, thought there was something wrong with me when I thought the spanx were crap! I don't expect to be a size smaller with shapewear, just to get a smooth outline. I might take a look at those ones from Debenhams for a wedding I have coming up- my dress is fab but definitely need to have the right underwear for it.

In answer to my own question I bought these the other day and wore them out at the weekend. Found them great, as someone else said its more for smoothing than expecting to lose a dress size or anything but they didn't roll once all night and were a great fit. Would recommend them!

They are perfect for wearing under those long jersey dresses that are like a long t-shirt. Smoothens out every lump and roll.
