Wake on LAN how?

    Hi Guys,

Ive been wanting to setup WOL for ages now but am unsure what I am doing any attempts I have made have failed.

    So here is my story:
    • I have a UPC Thomson Cable modem,
    • I have setup a fixed IP address on my PC and have forwarded the port 9 to that address.
    • I have enabled Wake on LAN in the BIOS.
    • My computer is wired directly to the modem.
    • I have used a website (http://www.wolcenter.com/) which will send the "magic packet" entering the external IP address (using DynDns.org forwarding), MAC address of the network card in the computer and port 9.

    None of that has worked.

I have tried from a complete shut down state and from just a sleep state. Does WOL ever actually turn on a fully shut down pc?

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Fionn

Have you tested it on the internal network? Would help ruling out where the issue is.

I have never tried it, but I think I remember something about having to enable it in BIOS settings. You may also need to have a NIC that supports it.

How would i test it internally? Would I need to install a program on another comp?

@Bonzo ya I do have it enabled in the BIOS and its an integrated network card on the MB.

Check the model name of the NIC, from DeviceManager, google that and WOL.

If it doesn't support WOL, get another PCI one that does.

Have you tried going into Device Manager, selecting your device under Network Adapters, and going into the Properties.
A lot of Network Devices have properties including WOL which can be enabled here.

Wake on Lan was enabled on my laptop without my knowledge, and it started up in the laptop bag one night. The laptop eventually shut down due to overheating, but it ruined the battery.

How does it do this? Would the shut down pc not be on the lan when it is shut down? How do you leave the NIC on and the pc shut down?

This might have something to do with it:

Property sheet for NIC, Configure button,Power Management tab, check box for "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby"

That's on XP, other versions might vary.

if its an onboard NIC then it should work as long as its enabled in the BIOS, if it's a NIC on a pci card you'll need the 3 pin WOL cable connected (not sure about pci express, never used one).

it should wake your pc either from a sleep state or totally shut down.

i use it to remotely turn on pc's at home, but i do it directly from the WOL feature on my router (which i can access remotely).

get it working on your local network first, then once you know that's working locally go for the wake on WAN. at the moment you have so many links in your chain you'll have trouble finding out where the real problem actually is.

also, have a look at these guys. http://www.wakeonlan.me/
