Arts 1: What might happen if you were never able to get to a tutorial?

I'm a mature student starting at UCC soon and I'm thinking of doing Politics in Arts 1 and most likley contuing with it to years 2 and 3. However in first year you have one Politics tutorial once a week, what happens if you can never (as in never!) get to it? Problem for me is I don't live in Cork, I live 40km away - a daily round trip of 80km. I'm home at 6pm on a Monday evening and would need to be up at 5.30am on a Tuesday morning as my Politics tutorial is at 9am on a Tuesday morning and the bus I have to get from the town where I live is at 7.30am, need to leave my house to get it at 7.15am. So, time wise it isn't great and I doubt very much that I'd ever make it. Would make all lectures though - so what could I expect if I never got to a tutorial? Would there be some sort of reprimand or sanction or deducted marks? Thanks.

Doesn't appear to be any marks for attendance of tutorials, so probably nothing. Although the tutors generally give great advice on writing your essays during the year and preparing. If it's anything like the history department, they probably return your essays to you too.

Yeah, I can't see where it says there are penalties for not attending tutorials, of course while there's probably no penalties it's the student who ends up losing out. But because I'm not in Cork I'll just have to roll with it, whether it impacts my studies or not. Thanks anyway.

If you bring it up with the lecturer he/she might be able to sort something out. At the very least you can always get any notes off someone who can attend the tutorials.

Yeah, getting notes is a possibility but not really a reliable one. It depends on who you know and how well you get to know folks within your class, and Arts classes can be rather large. When I was at UCC before I found that tutorials seemeed to be more about simply discussing what you'd learned or what had been gone over in lectures rather than about exploring any new stuff. Most handouts etc seemed to be given at lectures and not at tutorials but perhaps that was just the course I was doing.

Yeah, I'll check when I start and know the full tutorial times so hopefully there will be a later one which won't clash with my other subject choices. For now I only know that one tutorial time.

How did you find Politics? Thinking of doing it this year. What other subjects did you do?

Sorry for all the questions but finding it hard to pick subjects 3 & 4 so would appreciate some feedback

    Thanks

did history(good), Politics(good), Greek and roman(awful) and religion(boring and awful), Hitory is good but u need to work at it, politics is easy and enjoyable, greek and roman has a dutch tutor who is so poor and is really an awful lecturer that it ruined my whole experience and many others who i talked to! As for religion, its grand, soooo boring but no exam at the end of the year! 2 essays, team presentation and a learning journal.. If i was u i would stay away from Greek and roman and consider avoiding religion if it is one of ur choices.. What choices do u have in mind??

    Thanks for that.

I want to do geography & economics. Other 2 then math studies/politics and sociology/psychology/philosophy.

Geography and economics are supposed to be quite tough, heard philosophy and sociology were easy but not as enjoyable as many toght, heard psychology wasnt what anyone wanted. But everyone is different and everyone likes different things!

Cheers. good to hear from the perspective of students who have just studied them. I'll try and get to as many introductory lectures as possible

I genuinely can't see why you can't get to the tutorial.

Well, I would be home at 6pm on a Monday evening, I would then, to make that Politics tutorial, need to up at 5.30am on a Tuesday morning. So basically when I get home I would have to hit the sack about 2, max. 3, hours later. Now some people might do that but I sure ain't one of them, lol.

Thanks. I'll take a look and see what's what and what makes sense and doesn't clash with other subjects. You see for me I have to fit my UCC schedule around my bus schedule.

there are alot of politics tutorial times throughout the week, and u can pick whichever one suits you !! dawn french, the secretary of the politics department, is sound out as well and she ll change the slot no bother for ya !! i'm going into third year politics at the moment, but as far as i remember there was a sign up sheet outside the department office in the ORB so its easy to do, just keep an eye out for the sheet !!
