Researchers have shown for the first time that a single intravenous infusion of a genetically engineered virus can home in on cancer, killing tumor cells in patients without harming healthy tissue.

Scientists have been intrigued for decades with the idea of using viruses to alert the immune system to seek and destroy cancerous cells. That interest has taken off in recent years as advances in genetic engineering allow them to customize viruses that target tumors.

The field received a boost in January when biotech giant Amgen Inc agreed to pay up to $1 billion for BioVex,
the developer of experimental cancer-fighting virus OncoVex.

But the only "oncolytic virus" so far approved by a regulatory agency is for treatment of head and neck cancer in China.

In a study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, scientists at institutions including the University of Ottawa and privately held biotech company, Jennerex Inc, said a small, early-stage trial of experimental viral therapy JX-954 found that it consistently infected tumors with only minimal and temporary side effects.

al jazeera being a crap source of news

al jazeera being a crap source of news

Even if that was true what does it have to do with an article based on scientific experiments? Are you suggesting they are incapable of copying and pasting the results of the experiments into a legible article? Hell I'm sure even Fox could do it.

Better than the Daily Mail, which seems to be the main source of information on boards.

No. Your entitled to your opinion. Its not that, that I'm debating. Its the fact that you seem to be dismissing this article which is simply presenting scientific results with no room for any real distortion or misinformation.

Is your opinion based on the fact that they're Arabs, or that they present an alternative viewpoint to the equally biased Western one?

i'm dismissing it because AJ are in the same vein to me at least as fox news.

And no, PseudoFamous lol - i couldnt care less what nation ethnicity or creed they are. I dont see them as a credible source for any news. Same goes for other news agencies, including ones a lot closer to home than AJ. Do us a favor and save the racism card for someone who is actually a racist.

I'm sorry I still don't follow you. Are you saying this study is flawed? That AJ didn't report it correctly? That they are exaggerating the findings? What exactly are you dismissing?

I only posted this because in a lot of zombie type scenarios, wide spread use of viruses to kill a disease and the subsequent mutation of said virus cause the rise of the first zombies. Sooo I thought it might be relevant to this forum.

I've dismissed it and made it pretty clear why already.

Its yourself and PF thats turning this into a racist and political debate. I've made my point on how I see AJ and other news agencies as being crap.

Whats the real issue here? Cancerous tumor eating virus or Racism or News agencies?
if its to do with Zombies i'll chat to ye all day long, anything else and I get bored easily. Just so ye know..

    nada, nothing...

    i love this line

'consistently infected tumors with only minimal and temporary side effects'

    uh huh...miminal and temporary

There's no need to say this is a racist debate. That doesn't come into it at all. But Ill drop my argument seeing as it is turning into a debate, instead of zombie discussion.

I've already explain how this is relevant to zombies. Virus that are supposed to help us, mutate then create the first zombies. That seems to be the scenario in many zombie films/books etc.

Yep, thast exactly how its going to start. Temporay side effect my butt.

Oh, And AJ is one of the best news sources on the planet for international issues, reporting on things to a wide audience that would never get reported on otherwise due to lack of western interest.

Yeah I mean seriously this must be one of the most plausible ways for an outbreak to occur.
