Maybe I'm crazy, but what's all this lark about a car needing to be quick? I don't get the diesel + quick malarky. Why not just get a decent 1.8 or 2 litre car that doesn't have the diesel "premium" for what is a more powerful and cheaper car comparably?

    in before Octavia. :3

Edit 2: on topic though: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2350932

    BMW 320d either 136bhp or 150bhp.

Anything with the Fiat M-Jet 1.9 150bhp engine is lively enough.

    2.0 TDCi 130bhp Ford Mondeo.

gt tdi is supposed to be nippy

That Fiat engine is also in Alfa (obviously) but also Opel (Vectra, Signum, etc refereed to as 16v CDTI) and Saab (think it's TTID). Torque makes take off from lights quite competitive but I found mid range acceleration to be no more than average.

Why not get the fastest diesel production car (at the time).

    Seat Ibiza Cupra!

Define nippy? As by my definition of nippy no one has mention a nippy diesel car yet in this thread.

    Ibiza Cupra

    0-60mph 7.6s
    Max Speed 136mph

According to What Car "..brutal accerlation in high gears.."

    Golf Gti Nm 280
    Cupra Nm 330

    Skoda Fabia VRS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,597 ✭✭✭tossy

I know all about the cupra tdi was going to buy one a few years ago. I know 0-60 times aren't the be all but 7.6 secs isn't nippy.

I had one.. after an Octavia (1.8) vRS. The Fabia has much more brutal "round town - overtaking" performance, it only lacked the (illegal speeds) top end of course. My only regret was not getting a remap - something I only tried for the first time on the next car I had (Vectra Sri CDTi).

..oh and you can get 60+mpg :)

Apples and oranges comparison. The diesel will have longer gears.

shouldnt be anyway because vw never made such a thing!! some of the 150bhp ones were made as 'gti tdi' by vw add were sold with a gti badge.

a seat leon fr would also be worth a look. 150bhp standard. usually a bit cheaper than a golf.

well, do you want responsive or ?? im sure an octivia with remap is ideal with its size/diesel engine ??

Dont know about the GT TDI's whether or not they have the suspension + brakes from a petrol GTI... AFIK most were sold with the sports option (susp/brakes) + GTI interior making them fairly similar spec to a petrol GTI, but I dont know the specifics... People say they dont really exist, but surely if VW UK stuck badges on them and sold them from dealerships then technically they do exist??

There was def a diesel GTI made in 2001, but it only said GTI on the back, no mention of GT or diesel.... Only a few hundred made, only a few dozen brought into Ireland(guess).

Ah it is in fairness. We're not talking about exotica here. 7.6 is nippy (meaningless stat though).

Older Audi A4 TDi. Had a rental once and was surprised.

Pretty quick for what they are, small enough space inside though.

the 150 has the same suspencion as the petrol. all the 130 and 150 tdis have 288mm front disks. some of the petrols had these and some of the later ones had 312s (i think) all have 232mm rears

if you look on the data sticker that VW put on the car in the factory it wont say GT TDI. it will have 1.9 HL (highline) or CL (comfort line)

I would rather go with what vw say than some badge a dealer stuck on! sure they would put a r32 badge on it if you wanted:D

thats the 25th anniversary golf. most are registered in 02. differances from the standard golf include
18 inch bbs alloys, 256mm rear disks, 312mm front disks, red calipers lower suspencion. different front and rear bumper valances, side skirts, smaller mirrors, black headlights, recaro seats with gti on them, black roof cloth and pillars, sun voisers etc only avilable in red, black and silver

only avilable in red, black and silver

Weren't they available in yellow too?

//oh yeah sorry, it's the 20th anniversary that was

The US mk4 20th anniversary came in yellow, though I've never seen one...
as did the mk3 colour concept, but not the european 20th anniversary(mk3).

    @sean1141 I assume you'd be insuring them as a highline/comfortline then too? i.e. cheaper??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

Ya I would insure them as what they are on the data sticker

Never could understand the fascination young lads have for these Golf GT TDi yokes.

Because the TDIs are very decent cars.
The fascination is probably due to the GT on the back :)
I haven't seen much difference in the GT TDIs except rear lights and them being a bit higher specced than ordinary TDI.
My cousin drives the Mk2 Ibiza (2002-2008) with a 1.9 TDI with 131hp. 6 Speed Manual and I've to say that it does 160kph without any problems. Very fast. (Not as fast as the 2.8 V6 though :pac:)

No such thing as a '03 Golf GT TDi. 110 bhp 1.8 Focus van is nippy, so I'm told.
