was hard to pick a category, so mods feel free to move if you wish.

I was in the Ilac centre today, and they were starting stocking the new store beside Iceland. They're taking the spot where Home Bargains was, and HB are moved up to what used to be the upstairs of Dunnes.

Anyway, it's owned by the people who own the 99p stores in the UK, so hopefully they'll have the buying power to offer some decent value.

Gougers, should the the €1.11 store. Hopefully some Irish bright spark will give them a run for their money.

    LOL
in Italy it's the 99c store

In the UK there is a 98c store. It undercuts the 99p stores that undercut the pound shops.

There is already a 99c store in the Maple Centre which is also next door but one to Iceland. i reckon the franchise for both stores are owned by the same person. Some decent bargains in this shop defo worth a look

@OP you were struggling to find a home for this thread ... could I humbly suggest the appropriate forum for this is Rip Off Ireland?

I am not sure if the stores mentioned by other posters in Italy and Cork are related to 99p stores - suspect they are different - but this is *the exact same store* as the UK chain 99p Stores.

I gather that they plan to sell the same stuff in Ireland as they do in the UK but at a €1.50 price point, or about 25% more for the same goods. The name will be '€uro 50 Stores' which implies they are permanently pegging the Euro:STG rate at 1.00:0.66 (STG: Euro = 1.00:1.52).

I myself think this is an outrage. I don't expect them to sell at 99c, but maybe they could've found a name like Poundland did (Dealz) so that they are not bound to a specific exchange rate.

Here's more from the Irish Times - http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/0831/1224303237746.html

I see Euro2 are getting worried about these new chains moving in. A lot of their stuff is now 1euro and other stuff 2 for 3.

Your not comapring like for like really.

We have higher tax, higher wages , afaik higher insurance costs, probably everything is more expensive here, couple that with the fact the parent company trades in a different currency, and the euro is quite volatile at the moment.

Fair point on the different costs of operating here.

I am, however, comparing like with like. I am comparing the name they have chosen in the UK and the name they have chosen in Ireland and saying they should've picked a different one.

I don't think people will appreciate the subtelties of the additional costs of operating here, while they are surely valid.

Maybe when they open we will be able to assess their 'bargains' - hopefully at €1.50 they represent great value versus their Irish competition.

There are massive differences in cost bases in UK V Ireland. Of course its going to be more expensive here. Not a rip off at all.

A lot of the products they are selling in that shop are already for sale in Euro 2 moore Street , and a high percentage of them are 1 euro in the Euro 2 shop.

I don't think 99p stores are offering anything that isn't already available here .

I think its awesome that there is competition to the 2 euro shops. I was in the 1.50 store today and there is a bigger and better selection of products. No one has mentioned at all about the managers specials. They were posted on the outside of the store. Basically there is a small catch, you do have to spend 15 euros in the store to get an item for 1.50. I saw an iron and sandwich toaster, I can't recall the others. I think its for the first 150 customers through the door on a particular date.

I do know they were selling a 20pc tea set for 1.50 today.

I am delighted to see this kind of competition as it only helps us consumers to save a bob or two.I can just imagine the chaos in there at Christmas!

I was in the €1.50 store today, I think it's quite interesting that they have a number of products not normally available in Ireland and they have enough space to stock a fairly comprehensive range of groceries - it definitely sets it apart from the other euro stores.

From a casual glance, I think they actually are, they have some major brand cereals I've never seen anywhere else (Special K with hazelnuts and almonds, Sugar puffs "Choco puffs" etc.)
