Had a good morning, set out at 5.50 with the springer, walked along the Suir saw 2 duck getting up about 150 yards away, then met two lads coming the other direction, and they said they had seen nothing, so I turned around a headed back the way I came. Was walking along and a seen a mink swimming up the river, so I got down and started quacking. He swam straight to me and I shot him in the water. As I was walking along after shootin the mink two duck got up right beside me, I shot the two of them but they fell into heavy briars in a drain. The springer saw them falling and tore straight in and retrieved them. I would never have found them myself. I'm off forking bales of straw for the day now, and a few of us are heading up to a pond this evening, so maybe I'll get a chance at a few more

A very disappointing start to the deer season for me anyway. Opened up the barrier to my coillte letting and sat waiting for shooting light when I noticed lamps in the distance. So I sat and waited and sure enough they came on closer followed by pause of movement and then the gunshot. There were literally on the opposite road from me but obviously were'nt aware that someone was in the woods. Apart from that I seen a nice few animals but never got a shot off. ON the way home I met the wildlife rangers who had 2 jeeps pulled in and doing a search which was a welcoming sight and hopefully will continue. Roll on this evening so I can hopefully put a deer in my new fridge!!:)

Tried a few bits of red ground I have in Meath, first was in middle of harvest and between the combines rumbling late last night and the duck guys banging away they were nowhere to be seen.

Second had fresh evidence of thrashing and a wallow that had a visitor last night, dog reckoned there was something in the maize crop but no joy for me !!

    Cest la vie

Walked the river this morning never saw a duck. A friend rang me to shoot a splash tonight he saw duck on it earlier. We bagged three nice mallard I got a duck he got two drakes. Must of seen the best part of thirty mallard and could have shot a bagful each but neither of us are big bag shooters. Nice to see the season in though.:)

Got up at 5 yesterday, to a text from my old man telling me to get the fcuk out of bed. D'oh, managed to sleep through the 04:30 alarm or set it incorrectly. Great start

Clothes on, jeep loaded and a small breakfast. Picked up my dad and headed to meet my brother at our favorite duck spot. We were in position at 5.40 which was a bit late.

I had looked at a surfing website which is handy for first light times. It said 06:15 would be first light and sunrise at 06:51. Wasn't surprised that our group fired the first shots at 06:50 and the first mallard was in the bag.

Had a decent morning with our group taking 7 duck, saw geese too but came nowhere near us. My new shotgun was lovely to use and I got a mallard and diver.

Went home after 9 and had a big fry up. Usually the best part about September the 1st :D

Mid-morning and afternoon was spent preparing gear and zeroing a rifle for deer. Didn't go again then yesterday evening.

Was up this morning at 05:00 and went out with the brother and father again, this time for deer on a new permission.

Scouted it during the week and knew where they were likely to be. After a very short walk we met 7 deer eating some freshly cut grass, females had us copped immediately more than likely due to wind direction and excess noise. Balls. Stags and prickets lingered for a bit but never got in a decent position to take a shot, they were always moving towards the forestry and safety.

    Ah well, next time.

After a fruitless morning I headed out again yesterday evenin with a friend for round two, I had got permission a new place late last season but never seen deer on it so wanted to try it out...

It came up trumps and we managed to get 3 prickets from a large herd in the bottom of the valley at last light! Didnt enjoy the drag up tho! :(

As posted previously got nothing yesterday morning but went out from about half six pm and based on the assumption that things are so dry I would try some well hidden wet spots found last year when after pheasants.

In the heal of the real got a nice 2lb 10 oz mallard drake. Better still I had a nice retrieve from the dog, for those who have read my posts in the past I was worried in was not retrieving but soon as the mallard splashed he was out brought it back and dropped it about 5 feet from me before shaking, then looking at me as if to say now I retrieved can I hunt for pheasants:)

Went out in the boat at 5 with 2 mates from up the country.Lots of shooting going on around the lake.Over the course of the full day on the lake we got 11 duck,2 crows+ one greycrow between us.

Put out plenty of decoys and pulled in a lot of birds disturbed by other shooters.Had one lovely high duck that made my day.A flock of 20 passed over about a quarter of a mile away so I started blowing on the caller-they turned lovely and came in over us but high.I put the gun up on the last bird, led him about a yard and knocked him stone dead with a alpha-max 4(3/4 choke).Mates were rightly impressed.( I don't know if it was good luck or good shooting):D:D

I only got 2 duck+ the grey.Mates got 9 between them+ the 2 crows and really enjoyed themselves-and that's what its all about.....

went out tin the morning set of walking the shore to a good spot at 3 am, arrived at 4.20am an set out six mallard and 4 teal decoys, got my hide up and waited, at 5.30 3 teal wized high over my hide but it was to high and dark for a shot. missed 2 teal and a mallard!!
went home had a fry up!! got the boat and went to my favourite spot for evening flight, shot 8 mallard and left the lake at 9.10 pm a happy camper!!
cant wait until the migrants come in!! now that's shooting!!
