Ubuntu will run well with 2GB of RAM/Memory. Don't worry about the speed. Most Windows program will have a free alternative which will run on Ubuntu (Linux).

Ubuntu comes with an office suite which is as good a MS Office. It also comes with a lot of useful free software. Also there is much, much less malware for Ubuntu/Linux, so in that sense, it's safer.

Also, since Ubuntu is free, that is why it has a lower price than the same specs Windows machine.

I woundn't worry about the ram. I would be more worried about the processor type/speed, which is not listed.

Have a looks on these Irish sites.

    thanks

    is this any help :
    Intel Atom N455 ?

Also, they have it for an extra £50 with windows 7....probably worth it ? Only thing is, I remember hearing that 2gb isn't great with W7

That processor is the normal one which is in most netbooks. Its runns at 1.66GHz. Ubuntu will run perfectly fine at that speed, Windows 7 might be a bit sluggish depending on the version.

I would say just stick with Ubuntu. You'll get used to it very quick, and if you need help, there is a lot of forums online who will be more than happy to help ;)

Snap it up! Ubuntu is beautiful and I'd take it any day over any Windows counterpart. Ubuntu comes with a software center on it already which has over 30,000+ free programs which are just free, open source versions of programs Windows and the likes make you pay for. With Ubunutu's Libre Office software you can save your work in MS word format aswel so you won't have issues handing up projects and coursework for college.

I put Ubuntu onto my laptop after having serious issues with Windows and it has been running like a brand new machine. Definitely recommend it!

    Hmmm ok thanks.

Just don't know if I'll be able to get used to ubuntu fast enough for college. And then I suppose the computers there will have windows on them.

I might buy it tomorrow :) I'll start looking into the basics of ubuntu maybe.

Forgot to say, possibly stupid question but can you get iTunes on this ?

I'm sure I could move over my files with a USB stick aswell such as music etc.

Found out that iTunes wouldn't work :(

Does anyone know if windows 7 would run ok with this ? Dont know what OS I want tbh. It's an extra £50 for windows 7 version but it might be worth it.

Ubuntu has Rhythmbox on it which is the exact same as iTunes and works fine with my iPod. Tbh its a much simpler OS, everything is the same as it would be if it was a Windows OS. It just runs smoother and faster. What you can do is download the ISO image for Ubuntu and boot it from a cd on your normal computer to see if you like it and what you think. You can download Ubuntu from their site for free.

Windows 7 will run on this but forget about too much multitasking and it will be a little slow at times. I installed it on an acer aspire one it was usable but not great and that's lower specs than this As mentioned above try ubuntu for a bit n then decide..usually the main problem with Linux is getting it to work with your hardware but that shouldn't be a problem here as it comes preinstalled
