Not the nicest of topics but im experiencing some dodgy tummy moments on runs lately. Usually after 5 miles or so. Not really sure whats causing it.

Any tips on how to avoid this?

Diet. Are you having high fibre food during the day? a lot of caffeine even?

I have suffered from this since I started running 10 years ago- the only solution for me is prescription medication called lomotil. If i take this 2 hours before a long run all is fine. Evening runs (no pun intended ) are never a problem- I only have stomach issues when I run in the morning.

I can't think of anything diet wise which is an obvious cause. And I never really had this before the last few weeks. Ill try to keep a better track of my diet I suppose. And work from there

Don't eat for at least 2 hours before you run, if possible 3 hours. Make sure your well hydrated. Don't take any caffeine for at least 3 hours before, tea, coffee, cola. Try not worry about it, the more you think about it happening the more it will happen.

coffee right before a run does it to me or crap food. not a nice thing at all. was holed up in a hotel in london for about 4 hours a few weeks back in pain with it after a long run!

now that's an unfair advantage. :)

OP - I can get the same for anything over 4 miles.....usually crap food. If I go longish (8 miles plus) I find sports drinks will kill me, too much sugar. I have to dilute them.

Are you using any gels or caffeine tablets and the like? They can be lethal for getting the tummy going.

Are you going to the loo before you go for a run? if not try a strong cup of coffee to get the job done. it could just be food working its way through your system, sorry to ask but are your "motions" normal? i've alway found them very runny (pardon the pun) when i've got the real trots. (TMI :o)

The strong coffee is a bit of a double edged sword. Its great if it gets you going bofer you go out the door but if it doesnt its guaranteed to get you gong half an hour into your run.

OP if this has never been a problem before you need to look carefully at even the slightest change in you pre run diet, and that can be anytign up to24 hours before hand. If that hasnt changed then you need to look at otherfactors, are you more stressed than previously maybe. The slightest thing can impact your digestive system.

Its mainly my diet in the previous 24 hrs that affects me. If its only a small run of 5-8km I'm fine but anything over 10km its like my bowels are now made of teflon with everything moving a bit too fast.

Lowing my fibre intake the day before a longer run or a block session has helped alot. I dont use carb drinks of any sort just good old water suits my stomach perfectly.

Food on big training days I usually keep it simple with fruit alpen bars and an Isogel when I know my body wont be under pressure for the next 20 min or so in case it repeats on me.

Keeping it simple for me works a treat
