At approx 13 seconds in you can see the pass would have been a better option then kicking it.

    Would of been tackled short.

I don't think it's a try to be honest. It doesn't really look like he has downward pressure. Plus, the way the ball bounces suggests he didn't. But I suppoes you gotta give it to him.

I'd be skeptical enough myself but if I were the tmo I'd have awarded for the sheer audacity of it. Incredible quick-thinking.

He pretty much just threw it back through his legs, no downward pressure. Looks cool though :)

doubt it. he outran all the kick chasers, he woulda outran the potential tacklers

No try imo. He never had control of the ball. Watch it in normal speed and you can see that he pushes the ball backwards rather than touching it down, slow motion makes it look more ambiguous I think. Even in slow motion I can't see how it was given. Spectacular effort, however.

The skill level in the NRL is just amazing to me. League or Union I don't think there's as high a concentration of "How did he do that!?" moments anywhere else.

Yeah i think the pass would have been the better option alright...

I think it was a try alright. The ball touches the ground when his hands are on the ball. It's every so slight of a touch for a split second, but i think it's down... Close, but down. Fantastic athleticism....

Personally I think there are two many conflicting video angles to award the try. The video does not clearly show that he had contact with the ball and the ball with the ground at the same time. Downward pressure and being in control of the ball doesn't matter.

That's a try IMO, no doubt about, unbelievable improvisation (SP).

Was a superb try and hugely skilled BUT from a player on an enemy team that I could never stand.
So the good negated by the bad.
Therefore...I have nothing to say on the matter :D*

*Try of the year by a country mile. Even better than Meads' for Gold Coast.

First one is a try in Union anyway, he wouldn't have needed downward pressure, and at 1:14 you can see it doesn't leave his fingers when he grounds it. I'm presuming its the same rules in League, although that Gasnier try wouldn't have counted in Union so I'm not 100%.

On a side note, it drives me bonkers when commentators (including prominent former players) don't know when downward pressure is or is not required. And on a side note to my side note, if I hear one more gob****e in a pub shout out "that's no try, he's after touching the flag"..............it has only been what, 3 seasons now?

May be a stupid question but why doesn't he need downward pressure? I thought you had to have that when scoring a try?

General rule is if you are in possession of the ball, you just need to touch the ball off the ground.

If you're not in possession, say if the ball is on the ground and you're following up a kick, then you need downward pressure.

    I'll go find a link
