Hi, I've never played keyboard or any instrument before but I'd like to learn now.
I'm 18 years old, Can I teach myself or do I need to get a teacher (I'd expect to be very costly).

Also for any piano/keyboard players, is it a good instrument to learn?

What would be a good starter keyboard?

    Hi Cian,
I am in the same boat, however 10 years older, wish I had learned it earlier to be honest. I just bought a keyboard last week and went into some music shops in town and bought some Beginners books, however I have tried after several hours of frustration and it is possible to learn on your own with perseverance and dedication but it can take some time.

The biggest challenge for me is the chords and my speed on the keyboard. I did music in school so had an idea about the manuscript side of things, also in Opus2 on Georges Street you can buy a keyboard guide for 3 Euros, it sits behind the black keys on your keyboard and has all the letters on it and the positions on the stave.

I saw a Keyboard course in a music school in the city centre, its 170 Euros for 10 weeks, however it conflicts with my work schedule so I may need to get private lessons or something. Its a group class but they give you headphones so you cant be distracted by the other people practising.

Youtube is also a great resource for song tutorials for piano or keyboard.

Its my dream to be able to play Mozart Fantasy in D Minor :)

Id love to play the piano myself and start learning at 28. for the moment im a couple years into guitar and focusing on that, im maybe another 23 years i may look to start piano. Do the lesson on youtube help at all since that would probably be my number one source of info?

I'd say the youtube vids help alright, but also think you need someone to teach you one on one also

OP, do you want to learn keyboard or piano?

it's definitely possible to teach yourself, but it takes time, persistence and patience. put hours and hours into it and you will see improvement. i recommend learning some yann tiersen once you know the basics as it sounds amazing and is relatively easy - will give you a big confidence and motivation boost. something like

Keyboard actually but I figured they were much the same to learn. I like the idea of a keyboard being able to emulate many sounds and they are cheaper than pianos also. I want to be able to play music but one thing I'm not particularly interested is classical type piano. Thanks guys

Hi OP I am in the same boat as yourself I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano however I was recently given a keyboard and now I would like to learn how to play it properly so am looking into getting lessons I was checking out the Waltons school of music lessons which run for 10 wks and cost 170 euro it's a lot of money am just wondering has anyone on here taken any lessons there and can you tell me if they are any good? I would rather go for actual lessons than learn off youtube.

    +1 on this.

And as for keyboards, would a keyboard between €100 and €200 from somewhere like Argos be reasonable?

In the same boat as OP so... bump!

Anyone have suggestions on what type/price range of keyboard would be sufficient?

I've been really wanting to start playing the piano for a while and from looking around the web everyone seems to say you can't go wrong with Yamaha as a starter.

Think I'm going to go for something like this: http://www.waltons.ie/Product/View.aspx?id=1096&cid=23

Not that I've looked around much but Waltons has a better price than Argos anyway. Couldn't see anything cheap enough in The Buy and Sell either.

@scotty_irish that's the kind of thing I'd love to be able to play and hearing it makes me want to go out tomorrow, buy a keyboard and get cracking :D

I'm going to purchase that very keyboard myself (it's €255 delivered on Thomann site with a stand and some headphones)

    LINK

It has some built in lessons that will be handy for a beginner i suppose. I have a dvd course that i bought too (I can't remember the name but it came highly recommended. I'll have a look when i'm home)

    This guy:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/Lypur

has become invaluable to me since I started learning how to play properly. He has a ton of free video lessons up, around twenty minutes long each.

    Lessons arent too expensive

Average is about 250 for a 10 week term of 30min sessions, with a music school

Having a teacher is PRICELESS, as you get instant feedback on what you're doing wrong

And you're learning will be structured and progress from beginners level, as opposed to just learning the instrument 'generally' or by song

I'm 23 and I'm plannin to start back keyboard/piano this year, but I'm gonna do grades this time round

Didn't know whether to post here or make a new thread but anyway..
So a few years ago myself and my sister bought a keyboard with great intentions for it but when we both realised that we weren't both musical genius's it kinda fell by the wayside :pac:
So the keyboard was stored away to be forgotten about(well it was put in my younger brothers room as he had space for it) but recently over the past few months we've been hearing tunes coming from the room.
I've definately heard the pink panther tune and some version of that call me maybe song and others which I don't recognise.
Appartenly he's been watching youtube vids and trying to pick it up from there,he definately got alot more interest than I ever had anyway.
So to sum up can any1 recommend maybe someone on youtube thats good and maybe some cd book that I can buy?

I play a few instruments at this stage, I started the majority of them in the past two years. I never got any classes for keyboard/piano, and yet I find it's something I put more time into and is very fulfilling, motivation to play is possibly the single biggest factor into how fast you improve. A lot of it is down to the fact that I'm not pressurised into learning pieces I'm not too interested in. I rarely play other peoples stuff, instead I just play whatever sounds nice to me and end up writing things, sometimes almost by accident. I know some of the theory behind it, which I'd highly recommend looking into if you haven't already.
Some people benefit from teachers, others don't. I'd say a teacher would help with technique which is very important to start off, but the most important thing to do is just PLAY, and play because you enjoy it and never want to stop. You could see for a while how you get on without a teacher, a teacher may provide motivation, or feedback, which would be important if you never played anything else beforehand. :)
