Spiders getting bigger?

Over the past week I've seen 2 spiders that were over 2 inches long with hairy legs that are about a mm thick, got a picture but the camera on my phone is rubbish. Before this I'd never seen a spider here that was bigger than an inch long and the legs were always needle thin, have there always been spiders that big lurking…

They most definitely are getting bigger, a lot bigger I'd say.
I'm starting to regret take the legs off lots of them as a child.
How are they getting so big and what do they want?

The picture of the one on the measuring tape looks exactly like the one i found and the same size :eek: It made it's way onto my pillow, am very thankful it wasn't at night
