If its leaking when only half full then you have a damaged/cracked fuel tank. Unwise to continue driving untill you have it replaced.

Maybe you could climb under the car and light a match to see where the hole in the tank is ?

    Sorry, only joking.

How easily will petrol ignite in a case like this? I guess a spark from something thrown up from the road would do it?

Indeed it would. Petrol has a very low flashpoint compared to Daysul.

I cant say Ive ever had a problem though with petrol spilled all over hot engine on old lawnmowers / bikes etc. Lack of spark I suppose

A perfect air to fuel mixture is needed to ignite petrol in any significant way. It was done a mythbusters a while back. But there is still a chance of it, and if your moving when it goes up your car will turn into a inferno in seconds. Like sticking a supercharged blower on a fire.

You're at a greater risk when the car is stopped because you'll have a pool of petrol forming under the car.
This in itself isn't incredibly dangerous. What IS dangerous is evaporating petrol mixing with air to form a combustable mixture.
I remember a couple of years ago my old car had a leaking fuel line. I had to drive it from my house to my mechanic a couple of miles away.
He said I would be ok driving but to avoid all routes with traffic lights if at all possible to avoid pooling petrol underneath the car when I was stopped. :D

petrol vapour is what will ignite, and there's feic all chance of it sticking around long enough to ignite if you're moving. It's not a bomb waiting to go off, it needs to be seen to alright, but ffs it's not going to blow up at all.

It's only in the movies that cars blow up with leaking petrol tanks. :P

If it's a choice between the slight inconvenience of towing it to the nearest garage or even the slightest chance of being burned to death in a massive inferno I think I'll go with the former.

i will get it checked first thing in the morning.

right its been established that it maybe won't blow up but everyone's missing the most important part of this, petrol costs 1.50 per litre and your basically pouring it on the ground.:p
