    Hello there,

i know most studios can record a band live but i was wondering if any studios in Ireland specialise in it?

we as a band are trying to emulate the sound of Neil Young, Bob Dylan etc. where everything is recorded at once, in one room, with no click track and has an organic feel.

are any studios in Ireland particularly good at this kind of recording?

less about the studio and more about the size of the room and the producer/engineer... find a good producer and he'll do the rest, as long as you have the cash.

Yeah, if you can afford Bob Johnston or Daniel Lanois.

ive taken to recording live a lot lately.

check out leaders of men, a band i produce. if you go to the "music" tab and click the cd cover. "bite your tongue" and "who's waiting" were recorded about 85% live.

He's done some really great stuff. With Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris and Neil Young.

He does this thing of setting up loads of mics all around a room, and recording them with slightly different pans, and it creates this huge warm sound.

Yeah, you can hear the liveness, and it does sound a lot better for it.

definitly. but it doesnt always suit. with LoM. their sound is so open and spacey that we couldnt find the right groove on a click at all BUT ive recorded some bands that sound better on a click, especially if the drummer is good enough to push ahead or fall behind the click a touch when needed.

i remember recording a metal band a few years back where the drummer just wanted a straight click with no accent. he went thru quite a few time signatures in the song (maybe 4 or 5) and nailed it 2nd or 3rd take!

Peter Maher's Middlewalk Studio has one of, if not the best sounding live room in the country - it also has a fantastic control room.

Studio 1 in Grouse Lodge has a huge live room, drums sound great with plenty of other rooms and unique places that can create that live feeling.

Studio 1 in Windmill would be well able for it...

    yup +1

    +2

Also, depending on the size of the band, a place like Westland could be cool... room is "dead", but that can be a really good thing in this context...

Thanks for the mention MilanPanic :-)

Westland Studios can be set up for recording full bands all in the one room or all in seperate rooms, while still having line of sight between players.

You would think this would be the norm, rather than the exception, given that the very essence of a band is often in the live feel. Suppose it's a sign of the times that the ankle biter market seems to be more 'production suite' than 'live room' setting.

Fully live can be a frustrating experience though in fairness.

It is the norm, or rather it was. I reckon a lot of studio staff that these bands come across are either too inexperienced or too lazy to set up the whole shooting match and record the band together.

For me, it's what I do best, room full or microphones, lots of musicians, multiple monitor mixes, drum spill, acoustic panels, line of sight and all the rest of it. It's what recording is all about and in terms of dynamics it's really hard to beat it.

We have just recorded a well known Irish singer/musician with brilliant musicians and producer.

    The results were breathtaking.

Trend live? Well I never... Old skool or wot?

In all fairness though, every studio in Dublin has recorded the artists advertised on the website.

Check out our website if you want to see our live room. Plenty of space to record live. It was an old jam factory, converted to become a recording studio. We have plenty of experience recording live also. Either way best of luck with it. Kind regards, Data.
