Came across this in The Times (England) this morning.
Great read - and a few surprises in the article, about things I didn't know.
I think (hope) other boards.ie members would like to read it.

This man deserves to be recognised more by the world. His actions could have literally saved hundreds, if not thousands!

Rest in Peace Rick Rescorla - and WELL done!

... He was not seen alive again.

    * The now famous picture of him mentioned in the article: http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3522/t2rescorla6250524205330.jpg
(taken by a secretary, Rescorla uses his megaphone to organise the evacuation of bank employees from the south tower)

(The statue of Rick Rescorla at Fort Benning, Georgia)

I for one shall be buying a copy of the wifes book.
Its going to be a fascinating read to say the least.

I have watched the Mel Gibson film so many times and have it on HD - I never knew he died in 9/11.
Now thats a man and a hero!

    RIP Mr Rescorla.

    9/11?

    what happened november 9th?

Judging by the double chin hanging off him in that picture, I wouldn't imagine he took part in too many of those drills involving running down lots of stair wells.

I think he deserved to take it easier after his extensive honorable army service.
Would you begrudge any person if they gained weight?

    Resp?!
Surely 'p' is too far from 't' for this to be a typo?
Won't somebody think of the grammar?!

    no joke sis,

just ****ing annoying that we can't use a ****ing proper date system and call it 11/9 over here or sept 11. are we that ****ing lazy in this day and age?

sept 11 was a dark day yes but on the grand scheme of things it was nothing really. Its significance and meaning has all but been erroded by 2 wars, one in the wrong country and one that was illegal in every way it could be.

there are dark stories to every disaster, there are heroic stories from every disaster but there isn't a thread started every april for the titanic for example. Or every march for the madrid bombings that surely had a bigger effect on Europeans than an attack on america

That article was printed in a military magazine about six or seven years ago, about the time the Mel Gibson film came out

This was the front page of the magazine, very famous photo

As for you lastlaugh, the man has prostate cancer which I believe is the most common form of cancer for men.
On a lot of different pills and medical treatments, the body swells up as it reacts

    great article

not meaning to detract from the man, but that 'famous megaphone picture' was seriously underwhelming

Something else you may not know, 1 in 7 Americans believe that 9/11 was orchestrated by their own government.

    http://www.mid-day.com/news/2011/aug/300811-One-in-seven-americans-us-attacks.htm
One in seven Americans and Britons believe that the US government was involved in a conspiracy to staged the 9/11 terror attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people, findings of a poll released ahead of the 10th anniversary of the attacks have revealed.
The survey, carried out by Gfk NOP as part of a BBC Two programme- 'The Conspiracy Files - Ten Years On', interviewed 1,000 people in the UK and the same number in the US, and found that 14 percent of Britons 15 percent of Americans think the past administration was involved in the tragedy, the Daily Mail reports.
On being asked that despite having a general notion that "these attacks were carried out by Al Qaeda, some people have suggested there was a wider conspiracy that included the American government. Do you, yourself, believe that there was a wider conspiracy, or not?" one in seven people agreed that the Bush administration was involved in the conspiracy that brought down the Twin Towers in New York
The belief that there was a conspiracy was more common among younger people, with a quarter (24 percent) of 16 to 24-year-olds subscribing to the theory, the paper quoted the poll, as saying.
About two thirds of those polled, 68 percent disagreed that the attacks were a result of a conspiracy led by the former US government.
On September 11 morning in 2001, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners.
The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and thousands of those working in the buildings.
Both towers collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others.
A third airliner was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

Not sure what to think of that, they may not have planned it but I do believe they knew more than they let on

Why are we quick to always judge people on appearance. This was a brave man who risked his life to save others.

9/11 is the name of the event. It's no longer a date.

I think this might be the documentary...

nope, just fed up with this time every year with the constant documentaries/news reports/threads on the matter.

like i said when i edited my earlier post yes his story is great fair play and all that but meh anytime you look at events like this be it terrorism or natural disaster you have stories like this but this event always gets the most attention.

and the whole 9/11 v 11/9 thing just makes sense. its how its written over here but its another way our language is bastardised

*and yes i'm fairly aware that i'm complaining about language etc and probably have just posted with loads of spelling mistakes

just like the madrid bombing is 3/11?

attacks on the WTC would be much better and would also mean you could diferenciate between the towers, the pentagon and flight 93.

if you wanted to cover the multiple attacks then i guess the attacks on america or the september 11th attacks would be much better suited

Do you get that we're long past having our language bastardized? Who cares if people here call it 9/11 or not. The attacks took place in America, the event subsequently became know as 9/11...big deal...

Pounds changed to Euros..miles to kilometers....why is everybody bastardizing our poor country!?

You could be right - however that sad fact still don't take away from the likes of Mr Rescorla.

He died in the shadow of how he lived his life and a personal ideology he held true to.
    * In Ia Drang (the Valley of Death) he wouldn't leave the field of battle till all his men (dead or alive) were with him and had left the field of battle (and was shown in the film) all together. He wanted to bring his boys home to their family, one way or another so families could mourn with their loved one.
    * In 1993, when terrorists killed seven people with a bomb in the World Trade Centre car park — which Rescorla had warned was vulnerable — he was the last man out of the building.
    * In "9/11" he was the last to leave the building - and still he went back to see if he could find any more and get them out...

Such men like him do indeed need to be recognised more. Maybe someone will produce a book, an all in one record (as such) of some of these people.
Its a book I'd be honored to read.

Amazing guy. He was sure the tower was going to collapse but he went back in to evacuate more people. I can't imagine how that would feel - to know you were entering a building with a high possibility of never coming out again.

Only 3 of Morgan Stanley's employees passed away, I'm sure that number would have been higher but for Rick Rescorla's actions.

The term 9/11 has been popularized by the media here, maybe you should aim your anger at the media rather than people who refer to it as 9/11

People are entitled to their opinion also....The attacks had a profound impact on the lives of millions. It may not have resulted in the huge number of fatalaties as other attacks or natural disasters but it was a huge event in terms of world affairs and resulted in significant loss of life.

It was also a deliberate unprovoked attack on civilians and wiped out 2 landmarks in the worlds most famous city.

I suppose being Irish we would have called it something milder, "The inconvenience" or something

World war 2 = The emergency
    Civil war = the troubles.

I don't think we have any right to be critical of how any other country names their major events

9/11 may not have been the worst thing that ever happened but it did pretty much define a generation in the US.

Yeah and look at those ****ing gob****s over in the ****ing middle east reading from right to left, instead of our way of ****ing left to right.

Right out of respect for those that died in the attacks i'm gonna leave this thread me thinks before i say something i'll regret. I hava feeling it will end up going that way. I said my bits and pieces and i do understand how people have strong feelings on the matter. maybe that earlier poster was right and i am just having a bad day and don't know it.

I don't want to start arguments on the topic and drag it all off topic so i'll leave it at that

So how many people did this bloke kill in Vietnam as part of an occupying army?

What did he think of serving in an army that dropped chemical weapons onto innocent kids?

Unfortunately, as has been mentioned before, the article is from a pay to use site.

Reposting from beyond the pay wall of subscriber only content from a subscriber site could land boards.ie in legal troubles so unfortunately we'll have to leave it at that on this one.

And probably look to update that bastard charter at some point to include this also.
